CHAPTER1: INTRODUCTION

This type of lighting system is used in the tunnel-like structure. Where a person can go very
deep or long but also want to save on electricity consumption, like in big godowns, long
passages, warehouses and tunnel-like structures having many rooms or portions.

It follows the linear sequence for switching the lights from one end to the other. So that it
can cover all structure in less area.

When a person leaves from one room and enters next, by turning the light switch makes
earlier lamp switched OFF while the present room is switched ON. It turns OFF the lamp
while switching another. No need to go back and switch OFF previous lamp.

It was the best choice to save electricity and energy consumption where only one load i.e.
light bulb can be operate at a time. Nowadays, as CFL & LED bulb which consumes low
energy, this type of wiring is avoided due to its complexity ignoring the power consumption.

In this wiring installation tutorial, we will be going to control three lights bulbs using one
SPST (Single pole single throw or single way) and two SPDT (Single pole double throw or
two way) switches.

1} MCB:-

A miniature circuit breaker (MCB) automatically switches off the electrical circuit during an
abnormal condition of the network means in overload condition as well as faulty condition.

Nowadays we use an MCB in a low voltage electrical network instead of a fuse. The fuse
may not sense it but the miniature circuit breaker does it in a more reliable way. MCB is
much more sensitive to over current than a fuse.

Handling an MCB is electrically safer than a fuse. Quick restoration of supply is possible in
case of a fuse as because fuses must be re-wirable or replaced for restoring the supply.
Restoration is easily possible by just switching it ON. Let’s look at the working of the
miniature circuit breaker.
2} One – Way Switch :-

One way switches are regular switches widely used for commercial purpose. The light switch of
your room is a one way switch i.e. the light can be switched on or off from that particular
switch only.
3} Two – Way Switch :-

As I have already mentioned in the introduction paragraph, a two way switch is very useful
in staircase lighting as you can turn on the light just before you start to climb the stairs and
once you reach upstairs, you can turn off the light simply by toggling the switch placed near
the top of the staircase.

There are a couple of ways in which you can make a two-way switch connection. One is
an older method, which is not often used now-a-days and the other is a more modern and
safer version which is being implemented in industrial as well as residential applications.
Let us take a look at both these wirings.

Before proceeding, an important component called a Two-Way Light Switch is the main
element of the 2 Way switching, irrespective of the type of wiring used. It is a standard single
pole switch with three terminals.

The three terminals are usually named COM, L1 and L2, but sometimes COM, 1 Way and 2
Way are also used. In one position, the COM and L1 are connected while in the second
position, the COM and L2 are connected. This type of connection is typically called a “Break
before make” design, as the first connection has to be broken before making the second
connection.
4} LED Bulb :-
An LED bulb produces light by passing the electric current through a semiconducting material
—the diode—which then emits photons (light) through the principle of electroluminescence.

Don’t let that big word scare you! It essentially means that a material (in this case, the diode)
casts light when power is applied to it. Electrons jump from one side (an electron-full side)
to another (an electron-deficient side) across a junction (the “p-n junction”). Think of it this
way: When power is applied to the p-n junction, the side lacking in electrons wants to be
filled up with the charged electrons from the other side, and when power is applied the
electrons get eager to move. During this process, light is created.

In contrast, an incandescent light bulb works by passing electricity through a small wire, or
filament. The electrical resistance of the filament causes it to get so hot that it glows,
producing light. The fact that LED lights do not rely on heat to produce its light means it
runs cooler and is much more energy-efficient than an incandescent light bulb.
5} Wire :-

A wire is a single usually cylindrical, flexible strand or rod of metal. Wires are used to bear
mechanical loads or electricity and telecommunications signals. Wire is commonly formed
by drawing the metal through a hole in a die or draw plate. Wire gauges come in various
standard sizes, as expressed in terms of a gauge number. The term 'wire' is also used more
loosely to refer to a bundle of such strands, as in "multistranded wire", which is more
correctly termed a wire rope in mechanics, or a cable in electricity.

Wire comes in solid core, stranded, or braided forms. Although usually circular in cross-
section, wire can be made in square, hexagonal, flattened rectangular or other cross-sections,
either for decorative purposes, or for technical purposes such as high-efficiency voice coils
in loudspeakers. Edge-wound coil springs, such as the Slinky toy, are made of special
flattened wire.
CHAPTER 4:- PROCEDURE

 First of all, turn off the main breaker to ensure the main supply is switched OFF.
 Connect all the switches to the earthing / grounding terminals (not shown in the fig)
 Connect the Neutral wire from MCB directly to all the three lamps as shown in fig.
 Connect the Line (Phase or Live) wire to the first terminal of SPST switch.
 Connect the first SPDT switch common (middle) terminal to the second terminal of
SPST switch.
 Connect the upper terminal of first SPDT switch to the first lamp.
 Connect the lower terminal of first SPDT switch to the common (middle one) of second
SPDT switch.
 Connect the upper and lower terminals of second SPDT switch to the second and third
lamps respectively.
CHAPTER 5:- WORKING

It is a linear sequence of switching i.e. When a person enter the first room or portion, all
lighting points are switched OFF as the first SPST switch is at OFF position.

When he

 switch ON the SPST, the first lamp switch ON.

 Switch ON the first SPDT, the second lamp switch ON and the previous one switch
OFF.
 Switch ON the second SPDT, the third lamp switch ON and the previous (second one)
lamp switch OFF.
Similarly, when he:

Switch OFF the last i.e. second SPDT, the second lamp switch ON and third lamp switch OFF
and so on until he reaches to the first SPST switch and the whole circuit can be switch OFF by
turning it OFF.
CHAPTER 6:- ADVANTAGES

 It saves energy as only one load point is turned ON at a time.

 The previous light bulb will switch off when turn on the next one.
 It can save the power as well as time.

CHAPTER 7:- DISADVANTAGES

 Two or more lighting points can’t be turn on at once.

 It is a complicated wiring

CHAPTER8:- APPLICATION
It is commonly used for light switching in godowns, tunnel-like structures, long passages.. etc,

where the light is only required for passage or it requires only at one position at a time.
*CONCLUSION:-

Thus, here now we can manage godown wiring.
