Exp No 1 & 2

The document outlines an experiment for 4th semester students in the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering at Government Polytechnic – Chamarajanagar, focusing on the characteristics of Silicon Controlled Rectifiers (SCR). It details the aims, required components, circuit diagrams, theoretical background, and step-by-step procedures to determine the holding current, latching current, and break-over voltage of an SCR. The results of the experiment will provide essential values for further understanding of SCR functionality.

Tabular Column:
Ig = ______ mA, VBO = ______ V, IL = ______ mA, IH = _____ mA

Sl No. VAK in Volts VSCR in Volts IA in mA

Theory:
The SCR is a four-layered semiconductor device that forms NPNP or PNPN structure,
which eventually forms three junctions J1, J2, and J3. Among the three terminals of
the SCR, the Anode is a positive electrode, it will be on the P-layer and Cathode is a
negative electrode, it will be on the N-layer of the SCR, the Gate acts as a control
terminal of the SCR.

Forward Break over Voltage (VBO): It is the voltage above which the SCR enters
the conduction region in the absence of a gate signal.

Latching Current (IL): Latching current is the minimum forward current that has to
be maintained in order to switch the SCR from forward blocking state to on-state.

Holding Current (IH): Holding current is the minimum forward current below which
the SCR switches over from on-state to the forward-blocking state. The holding
current is usually lower than the latching current.

Procedure:
1. Connections are made as shown in circuit diagram
2. Both RPS - VGK and VAK should be in zero position and the supply switch is ON
3. To find Gate current require to trigger the SCR:
Fix the Anode-Cathode voltage VAK around 20V. Increase the gate current
gradually by using RPS VGK until the SCR turn on (VSCR meter becomes
approximately 0.7V). Note down the gate current required to turn on the SCR.
4. Switch OFF VAK & VGK (Don’t vary VGK and bring VAK to zero).
5. Increase the VAK gradually until VSCR jumps to 0.7V, note down VAK reading i.e.
VBO and the value of IA shows the Latching current (IL)
6. Now gradually vary the VAK and note down the corresponding readings of VSCR
and IA.
7. Repeat the above steps for some other gate current value
8. Plot graph between VSCR and IA.

To find Holding Current (IH):

9. Bring back RPS - VGK to zero position (i.e. remove gate current).
10. Gradually reduce the anode voltage by using RPS - VAK, Anode current IA also
decreases slowly, at certain value, the anode current will jumps to zero suddenly. Note
down this current value. (This is Holding Current).

Result: The Latching current (IL), Holding current (IH) and Break over voltage
(VBO) of SCR is determined
The Latching current IL = ________ mA
The Holding current IH = ________ mA
The Break over voltage of SCR VBO = _______ V
