Government of Nigeria was aimed at exposing students of higher institutions to
acquire industrial skill and practical experience in their approved courses of study
and also to prepare the students for the industrial work situation which they are
likely to meet after graduation. This technical report contains the experiences
acquired during my 8 weeks students’ industrial work experience scheme (SIWES)

work in news room under news and current affairs department. The report consists
of different chapters which deal with the industrial training conducted. It

improvement of the scheme.
CHAPTER ONE

1.0 THE BACKGROUND OF SIWES

SIWES is a deliberate effort by the federal Government of Nigeria in order to
empower undergraduate students of tertiary institution to gain practical knowledge
of what they are being taught in the classroom theoretically. The program was
introduced in 1974 by Federal Government as part of manpower development
program. The program was design to supplement the theoretical learning of student
from academic institution with exposure to practical industrial activities in their
various disciplines. Student’s institution, employer of the labor and government
{Industrial training Fund} are involved since the inception of the program. The
corporative machinery between the industries and institutions produced widely
effective result with supervision and control from the industrial training fund. The
Industrial Training Fund {ITF} was established by the Federal government of
Nigeria in October, 1971. Under the decree No. 47. The decree is to ensures that
greater participations of industries in the technical/education. Student’s industrial
work experiences scheme {SIWES} was established by ITF in 1973 to solve the
problems of lack of adequate practical skills and training prepared from
employment in industries by Nigerian graduates of tertiary institutions.
The industry training fund is a channel purposely to bridge a gap between
theoretical and practical aspect that technical education is presented and serve
industries. Therefore, it is necessary that high level of corporation is found among
tertiary institutions and industries. The educational interference of the fourth
common wealth approved those industries shall be closely associated with
technological education and through polling making manpower, planning,
curriculum development, provision of opportunities for industries expenses
accreditation consultancy services, part time courses and vocational guidance.
Corporation between industries produce the number and quality of technical
workers required by the industries.

CHAPTER THREE

MY EXPERIENCE AT USAKU FM, YOLA

3.0 INTRODUCTION
This chapter contains the knowledge/experienced learnt during my 8 weeks
industrial training at USAKU FM, Yola. It also contains the activities I did and the
opportunities I had during my 8 weeks of attachment. Below is the sequential
explanation of what I have learnt and did from my day one to the last day at
USAKU FM, YOLA.

3.1 NEWSROOM
This is the department that is saddled with the responsibility of sourcing, writing,
editing and dissemination of news. The unit also presents news and current affairs
programs.
In this department, I learnt how to source a news, such as brainstorming a topic and
mapping a topic. I also learnt how to treat press release, how to write a good news
story. In the department, I have about ten (10) reports that I filed in and was aired.
3.2 PROGRAMS DEPARTMENT
This is the department that is saddled with the responsibility of organizing and
monitoring programs such as educational and entertainment among other
programs
In this department, I learnt some of the techniques of producing jingles and I
produced one. I always participated in different programs, prominent among the
programs is "Ji ka Karu" (Listen and learn).
3.3 CONTROL ROOM
This is the section, unit or part of the transmission room where most of the
electronic devices, such as computers, console, and speakers among others are
kept.
In this unit, I learnt how to use Cool edit pro 2 editing software to edit sound.

assignment..
I had the privilege of attending a seminar/workshop that was organised for Media
practitioners on the need to show love to drug abusers instead of hatred. etc.

CHAPTER FOUR

SUMMARY, CHALLENGES, CONCLUSION AND

RECOMMENDATIONS

4.0 SUMMARY
Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (S.I.W.E.S.) is a practical course
meant for the students to acquire practical knowledge in addition to what we have
learnt theoretical based in the class.
Seeing the significance of the scheme the management of Bayero University, Kano
allocated six weeks for the training to enable the students to learn more concerning
the practical aspect.
The program has really helped me in many ways. These among others are what I
have learnt during my stay at NTA Yola, I learnt how to source story ideas, how to
treat press release, translation, video editing by using Avid video editing software,
interviewing, etc.
Beside what I learnt so far, I had the privilege of interviewing some prominent
personalities such as Commissioners, traditional rulers, head of agencies and
associations among others. I also conducted about 5 VOX-POPs. I went for more
than 10 assignments (beats reporting). I was also opportune to file in about 10
reports and lastly attended numbers of press conferences.
4.1 CHALLENGES
One of the biggest challenge been face is the issue of transportation. A times you
would have a story on ground that you want to work on but as a result of
inadequate vehicles, the story would definitely be failed or rather you use your
pocket money to do the story which is very difficult for an IT student.
Another problem is the issue of equipment the station lacks broadcast equipment;
even though the management says the station is on project.
Also the first day I went on to voice a report will indeed be a day of remembrance
in my life. There was over speeding in my presentation. And this happened as a
result of phobia and the presence of my editor in the studio.
4.2 RECOMMENDATIONS
There is a need for the provision of transport fare to less privilege individuals, as
financial instability is affecting students from going to their places of assignments.
Stakeholders should also bridge the gap that exists between the classroom and the
industry because of the great impacts SIWES has on the future of students. If
possible, duration of the training should be extended from 6 weeks to a semester or
even full session.
In addition, students who are opportuned to go for the Industrial training in any
media outlet should make good use of their time in doing what is rightful.

4.3 CONCLUSION
The training and experiences I had during my stay at NTA Yola, cannot be
over emphasized. It revealed to me that MassCommunication plays a
significant role in shaping the image of the society by disseminating
credible, essential and informative messages not only to the populace, but
also public bodies, government officials, stakeholders, civil servants, and
business men and women. The media is capable of holding government to
account in exposing what the citizens need to know about government's
duties on them which it is trying to make underneath.
