Summary
• Security
• Writing an experimental procedure
• Training
Security
• Stay safe
Being safe in a laboratory is the first step to work correctly.
Safe working protects: You / Other lab workers / Cleaners
Visitors / Your work
• No rings
• No open shoes
• Only pants that cover all your legs
• No tights
• If you have long hair you must attached them !
Security
• Gloves
The gloves are really useful in a Laboratory but can also make things worst
There are many different types of protective gloves : Nitriles/ Latex / Vinyl / PVC
In your PW at UFAZ you will only use nitrile gloves
• When should I used gloves ?

Only when I am manipulating something dangerous !
(Acids/Bases/CMR reagents..)
I put my gloves on just before my manipulation, and I removed them right after !

• Why ?
If my gloves are dirty (by something visible or not), When I touch something else,
It will be contaminating too.
(Wardrobe, Pen, Notebook, My clothes, My face, My friends arms etc…)
Security
• Fumehood
You will, most of the time, work under a
fume hood, the goal is to vacuum the vapor
To avoid breathing them
You need to keep your work place clean and tidy as much as possible

Security
• Glassware
• Before using a glassware you need to :
• Be sure of the cleanliness, for the success of your experiment and also to avoid any
unwanted reaction
• Check glassware for stars or cracks.
• Dispose of chipped or broken glassware
it is a risk to you and others
• You will find in every laboratory a broken glassware disposal
• Each reagent and solvent has its own code called CAS number.
Security
• Pictograms
Security
• SDS (Safety Data Sheet)
An SDS (formerly known as MSDS) includes information such as
• the properties of each chemical;
• the physical, health, and environmental health hazards;
• protective measures;
• safety precautions for handling, storing, and transporting the
chemical.
It provides guidance for each specific chemical on things such as:
• Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
• First aid procedures
• Spill clean-up procedures

Security
• Waste disposal
Waste disposal is a normal part of any science laboratory. As teachers or students
perform laboratory experiments, chemical waste is generated. These wastes should be
collected in appropriate containers.
Many laboratory explosions have occurred from inappropriate mixing of wastes, such as
mixing acid waste with organic wastes, so be sure that waste materials are compatible. Mixing
acid with any organic materials may result in an over pressurization of the waste container and
release of the chemical into the workspace.

• In each Laboratory you should have at your disposition :
• Extinguisher be careful each extinguisher as is own utility.
• Fire Blanket can be used to extinguish a small fire or to wrap around a
person in case of a fire.
Security
• In case of projection
• If during a practical work you have a product on your skin and you start to
feel burns or itching
• Put the burned area under water for at least 5 to 10 minutes
• If you have a projection in your eyes
• Use the eyes washer immediately

There is also a First Aid kit in each laboratory, in case of cut or burn
