PROBLEM SET : ALGEBRA

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS: SOLVE FOR THE FOLLOWING ITEMS BY PRESENTING COMPLETE SOLUTION ON
SHORT BOND PAPERS, HAND WRITTEN (NON CURSIVE, NO REQUIRED FONT SIZE AND LETTERING STYLE).
INDICATE YOUR NAME, COURSE/PROGRAM AND STUDENT NUMBER ON THE FIRST PAGE OF YOUR
OUTPUT.

I. SIMPLIFY THE FOLLOWING ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSIONS:

1. (- 2 −2 a − p ) 3
2. (b 5 ) 3 4b 3 − (2b 3 ) 4 (3b 3 ) 2
−1/ 2
 u 10 v 0 
3.  

(3p −2 q 3 ) 2 (5p −1q 4 ) −1
5.
(p 2 q −2 ) 3
6. (x n  x n )  (x n ) 3
( x −1 − y −1 ) 2
7.

8 6
13 5
2. 10 − =4+ −x
4x 2x
7 8x
3. − = -4

4 6 15
4. + =
x − 1 3x + 1 3x + 1
5. S = 12 n[2a + (n −1)d] ; find a.

III. FIND A SOLUTION TO THE FOLLOWING WORDED PROBLEMS.

1. A piece of wire 35/3 in long is to be divided into two parts such that one part is 2/3 that
of the other. Find the length of the shorter piece.
2. One number exceeds another number by 5. If the sum of the two numbers is 39, find
the smaller number.
3. The sum of three consecutive integers is 306. What is the largest integer?
4. If one number is three times as large as another number and the smaller number is
increased by 19, the result is 6 less than twice the larger number. What is the larger
number?

IV. FIND THE SOLUTION FOR x AND y IN THE FOLLOWING SYSTEMS OF LINEAR EQUATION:
1. 3x − y = - 6 ; 2 x + 3y = 7
2. 5x + 2 y = 3 ; 2x + 3y = -1
3. 2x − y = 4 ; x+y=5
