1. Barr bodies, a type of sex chromatin, were discovered in the nuclei of female mammalian cells by Barr and Bertram in 1949. 2. Barr bodies represent one of the two X chromosomes that are inactivated in female somatic cells. 3. The presence of Barr bodies allows determination of fetal sex by examining amniotic fluid cells, as Barr bodies will be present in nuclei of female cells but not male cells.
