Activity 1.1. Mind Mapping

Media involves different communication channels (broadcast, internet,

social media) with different access, often transmitting information (framing,
representation, reliability, validity, objectivity) that will shape communication. The
interaction and understanding of this information are affected by persuasive
techniques and socialization processes. Responsibility in media use involves
avoiding bias and upholding impartiality, while acknowledging the possibility of
manipulation. Lastly, interactivity (convergence, data privacy, surveillance) further
complicates the influence of media and information on communication.

Guide Questions
1.What are the similarities of media literacy, information literacy, and
technology literacy?
Media literacy, information literacy, and technology literacy share a common
ground in critical thinking and evaluation skills. They all involve the ability to
access, analyze, evaluate, and create content using various media and technologies.
All three literacies emphasize responsible and ethical use of information and
technology. They are interconnected and mutually reinforcing, meaning
proficiency in one enhances the others.
2.How would you differentiate the media literacy, information literacy, and
technology literacy?
Media Literacy: Focuses specifically on understanding and critically evaluating
messages conveyed through various media forms (print, audio, visual, digital). It
emphasizes analyzing the message's purpose, audience, and effects.
Information Literacy: Primarily concerns the ability to find, evaluate, and use
information effectively. This includes determining the credibility and relevance of
sources, avoiding plagiarism, and understanding copyright issues.
Technology Literacy: Centers on the ability to use technology effectively and
responsibly. This includes understanding the functionality of various technologies,
troubleshooting problems, and utilizing technology to access and create
information.

What I Have Learned

1. I believe media and information literacy are important because it equips one
with the thinking skills needed in today's information environment, which is
complex and very overwhelming. It helps identify sources that are credible,
evaluate information critically, and use information responsibly to avoid
misinformation and manipulation.

2. I believe that literacy in mass media and information technology is a lifelong

learning experience, through learning and practicing continuously. It
requires effective information searching, critical thinking, and responsible as
well as ethical interaction with technology-in what form is left to the
individual's personal expedience. Formal education, self-directed learning,
and practical experience enhance this process.

3. I believe that the reliability and truth of information disseminated through

social media vary. While social media can be a good source of information,
it's always important to look at it critically and discerningly. Easy sharing of
information also leads to the easy spreading of misinformation and biased
content. Therefore, verification of information from multiple sources is
important and so is awareness of the potential for manipulation and bias
What I Can Do
Editorial Cartoon Analysis
The cartoon depicts how fake news is spread through the social media,
such as Facebook and Twitter. An individual is seen spreading “Fake News” to an
unsuspecting audience, indicating that it can spread easily without the audience
making judgements. The keyboard is also use to depict the ease with which it
spreads and the rapidly with which it is disseminated. Thia is relevant to
responsible media use because it reflects the susceptibility of a democratic society
to manipulation based on false information. The citizenry has to be critically
thinking, scrutinizing information based on multiple sources from reliable media
outlets before accepting it is a factual. The cartoon serves as a warning about the
importance of media literacy and responsible information consumption in
maintaining a well-informed and functioning democracy.
