Lesson 3: Developing Ideas and Expanding Vocabulary

Objective:
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
 Develop ideas in more detail and add depth to your writing.
 Use a wider range of vocabulary to express yourself clearly.
 Write more sophisticated/complicated responses (100–150 words) for Duolingo
prompts.

Part 1: Expanding on Ideas

Explanation:
To make your writing more engaging, it’s important to develop your ideas with more
details, reasons, and examples. Instead of writing short, basic sentences, think about
why and how something happens, or provide additional examples to support your
point.

Example Prompt:
Describe a person who inspires you. Why do they inspire you?
Basic Response:
"My mother inspires me because she is hardworking. She takes care of our family, and
she is very kind." (23 words) increase/rise/go up # decrease / fall/ go down
Improved Response:
"My mother inspires me because of her incredible dedication to our family. She works
long hours as a nurse, but she always makes time to support me and my siblings. Despite
her busy schedule, she remains patient and kind. For example, she helps me with my
homework every evening and listens to my problems. Her selflessness and strength are
qualities I admire and hope to develop in myself." (71 words)
Explanation:
Notice how the improved response adds more specific details, examples, and
explanations. It shows why the writer’s mother inspires them by giving more depth to
the answer.
