Process Simulator
What's a process simulator?
• A process simulator is a computational tool that models and simulates industrial processes and phenomena, whether
mechanical or chemical.
• The tool is widely used in engineering, especially in chemical engineering, in order to predict operational conditions and
model equipment.
But why exactly is this so important?
Imagine if you could predict parameters and data before the construction stage or without making changes in operational
systems. Not only does this reduce costs, but it also avoids errors and streamlines projects.
How does a process simulator work?
• A process simulator is based on equations and mathematical models that represent the physical and chemical processes
that take place in an industrial plant.
• These models are used to predict how process variables, such as temperature and flow, vary over time.
• This allows engineers to test different scenarios and optimize processes before implementing them.
• Simulators can also be used to look for operational conditions that would improve already existing processes.
Where do you use a process simulator?
Process simulators aren't limited to a single industry or application. They are versatile tools that can be used in a variety of
contexts. In the next slide, we list some of the areas where process simulators can be applied.
Introduction to modelling and simulation:
• Chemical industry
In the chemical industry, process simulators are vital for modeling and optimizing complex chemical processes. They allow
engineers to test different process conditions and choose the most efficient one, ensuring high-quality products and efficient
processes.
• Education
Process simulators are used in chemical engineering education in order to familiarize students with different industrial
processes, as well as introduce them to this type of tool so commonly used in the industry.
• Research and development
In the field of research and development, process simulators are indispensable tools. They allow researchers to try out new
ideas and optimize existing processes without the need for expensive and lengthy experiments.
• Product and process development
In product and process development, simulators are used to predict the performance of new products or processes. This allows
engineers to make adjustments and optimizations before implementation, saving time and resources as a result.
• Manufacturing
In manufacturing, process simulators are used to optimize production and reduce waste. They allow engineers to test different
process settings and choose the most efficient one.
• Analytical Chemistry
In analytical chemistry, process simulators are used to predict the behavior of chemical substances under different conditions.
This is useful for developing new analytical methods and optimizing already existing ones.
Introduction to modelling and simulation:
What are the advantages of a process simulator?
There are several benefits of using a process simulator, from reducing risks and costs to predicting important parameters. Let’s
look at some of these advantages.
• Reduces risks in project implementation
One of the main benefits of a process simulator is reduced risks. By simulating a process before implementing it, engineers can
identify and fix potential issues, avoiding dangerous and expensive errors during implementation.
• Avoids unnecessary expenses
Another advantage is saving resources. With a process simulator, you can test different scenarios and choose the most efficient
one, avoiding unnecessary expenses from conducting real experiments.
• Predicts thermodynamic and kinetic parameters
Process simulators can also predict thermodynamic and kinetic parameters, which are critical for process performance. This
allows engineers to optimize processes to obtain the best performance possible.
Introduction to modelling and simulation:
How process simulation software works?
Process simulation software uses computer algorithms and data science to first create a digital model of a business process and
then forecast how the digital model would react in different kinds of process scenarios.
