3. 3. 6

4. 4. 4

box and
you will describe
C. Establishing a purpose of the lesson

 Start the lesson by showing pictures

Class, what have you seen in the picture?

A girl with a flower teacher!

Very good!

Her name is Mary. She wants to know how many

flowers are there in her hands. Can you help her? Yes Teacher!

D. Presenting examples/instances of the new

lesson

Today we are going to learn the relationship of joining

sets to know the meaning of addition. But before that,
let us know the meaning of some words to help us
understand our discussion later.

Unlocking of Difficulties

1. Addition - is joining group of objects together to form

a new set.
2. Set - is a collection of things and objects.
3. Total or sum - the answer in addition.

Now, let’s go back to the problem of Mary.

For us to be able to help Mary. Look at the first picture.

How many flowers are there in her hands?
2 Teacher!

Then she has a friend. Her friend give her a flower.

How many flowers are given by her friend?
There are 3 Teacher!

How many flowers are there in all?

5 of flowers all in all!

+ =
+ =

2+3= 2+3=5

Yes, 5, you got it correctly!

Class to get the sum correctly we should FIRST count

the number of objects in each set so that we could
write the corresponding number in each set correctly.
NEXT joined or put together all the elements in the
new set. FINALLY, write the addition sentence. Put the
plus sign between the numbers 4 and 3 and read it as
4 plus 3 is equal to 7.
Yes Teacher!
Are you following class?

We can also do or say the addition sentence this way:

4 and 3 are 7
4 added to 3 is 7
The sum of 4 and 3 is 7

Can Mary now know the number of flowers inside her Yes Teacher!
basket?
E. Discussing new concepts and practicing new
skills #1

Now let’s have another example:

Sarah has 5 apples. She buys 3 more apples. How
many apples does Sarah have now?

5+3= Sarah has 8 apples Teacher!

Very good! There are

= 8 apples

Very good!

F. Discussing new concepts and practicing skills

#2

Group Activity

Group 1
Direction: Add the objects in the two sets. Write your
answer in the blank.

1. + 1. +
2 + 3 = ____ 2 + 3 =5

2. +
4 + 4 = __ 2. +
4+ 4 =8
3. +
3. +
4 + 3 = __
4+3=7

4. + 5. +
3 + 3 = __ 3+ 3=6
Group 2
Direction: Give the addition sentence. Write the
missing number in each blank.

1. + = 1. 2+2 = 4

____ + ____ =

2. + = 2. 6+1=7
____ + ___ =

3. + = 3. 4+2=6
____ + ____ =

4. + = 4. 3+1=4
___ + ___ =
G. Developing mastery (Leads to Formative
Assessment)

Direction: Look at the sets carefully. Choose the letter

that shows the correct addition sentence.

1. 1. B

A. 6+6=12
B. 6+3=9
C. 5+4=9

2.
2. B

A. 4+1=5
B. 2+2=4
C. 3+1=4

3.
3. A

A. 3+3=6
B. 4+3=6
C. 2=4=6

4.
4. B

A. 4+5=9
B. 4+4=8
C. 3+5=8

H. Finding practical applications of concepts and

skills in daily living

Again class, what have you seen in the picture? A girl holding a flower!

Do you love flower? Yes Teacher!

Yes because flowers make our surrounding beautiful

and colorful. Let us protect and take good care of
them. Am I clear? Yes Teacher!
Very good!

I. Making generalizations and abstractions about

the lesson

What is addition? Addition is joining group of objects

together to form a new set.

What symbol used to show addition? Plus(+)

Very good!
J. Evaluating Learning

K. Assignment
