Goals

Rules
Dealing and Starting the Game
1. Every player picks a card.
2. The person who picks the highest number deals.
a. Action Cards count as zero for this part of the game.
3. Shuffle the cards.
4.
5. The first player is normally the player to the left of the dealer and play follows a clockwise direction.
6.
7. The top of the Draw pile is turned over to begin a Discard pile
a. If the first card turned up from the Draw Pile (to form the Discard Pile) is an Action card, the
Action from that card applies and must be carried out.
b. The exceptions are if the Wild or Wild Draw Four cards are turned up, in which case – Return
them to the Draw Pile, shuffle them, and turn over a new card.
8. At any time, if the Draw Pile becomes depleted and no one has yet won the round, take the Discard
Pile, shuffle it, and turn it over to regenerate a new Draw Pile.

Player Actions
1. Every player views his/her cards and tries to match the card in the Discard Pile.
a. You have to match either by the number, color, or the symbol/Action.
b. You can also play a Wild card (which can alter current color in play).
2.
3. If that card can be played, play it. Otherwise, the game moves on to the next person in turn. You can
also play a Wild card, or a Wild Draw Four card on your turn.
4. After a card is drawn, the player can discard it if it is a match, or if not, play passes on to the next
player.

Scoring and Victory Conditions

1.
2. The moment a player has just one card they must yell “UNO!”.
a. If they are caught not saying “Uno” by another player before any card has been played by
other players, the player must draw two new cards.
b. Assuming that the player is unable to play/discard their last card and needs to draw, but after
drawing, is then able to play/discard that penultimate card, the player has to repeat the
action of calling out “Uno”.
c. The bottom line is – Announcing “Uno” needs to be repeated every time you are left with one
card.
3. Once a player has no cards remaining, the game round is over, points are scored, and the game
begins over again.
4. First to 500 points wins the game.
a. The first player to get rid of his/her cards receives points for the cards left in opponents’

Meaningful Choices in UNO

Determining Meaningful Choices
updated 6/4/19

1. Choosing between a Matching Number, Color or Symbol

● The player may have a matching color, number and symbol in their hand all at once. They must
choose between which one (if any) to play.
○ This is meaningful because the player may want to hold on to a certain color, number or
action depending on the other cards in their hand and the cards of their opponents.

2.
● The player may have an available play, but chooses instead not to play their card and draw from the
pile.

○ This choice occurs each turn.

3. Choosing a Color when a Wild Card is played

○ This is meaningful because the player can choose between any of the four colors. They can
set themselves up for their next turn by choosing a color they have in abundance.
○ This choice occurs whenever a wild card is played.

Explanation (answer in at least one paragraph)

Choose one of the Meaningful Choices listed above. How does that Meaningful Choice impact
UNO? How does it improve the gameplay? What would the gameplay be like without that choices?
