Charachteruser Interface

The document compares Character User Interface (CUI) and Graphical User Interface (GUI), highlighting that CUI is a text-based interface used primarily by developers and system administrators, while GUI allows users to interact visually with a computer using a mouse. CUIs require command typing in a terminal, whereas GUIs utilize visual elements like icons and buttons for user interaction. The document also outlines the typical users of each interface, with CUIs being favored by tech professionals and GUIs being more accessible to general computer and smartphone users.

CHARACTER USER INTERFACE

VS
GRAPHICAL USER INTERFACE

What is Character User Interface?

o Character user interface (CUI) is a text
based interface that uses alphabets and
numbers to perform commands on a
computer.

What is Graphical User Interface?

o Graphical user interface (GUI) that allows
users to visually interact and command
a computer using a mouse as a pointing
device.
How does CUI work?

o A user must type a command into a

“Terminal Window” and the computer
will execute the command and display all
the results in the same window.

o CUIs are often used by developers,

system administrators and power users.
CUIs are also used when GUIs are not
practical, for example; when computers
are not remotely accessible.

o CUIs are usually easier to use than GUIs

are but can be harder for those who are
unfamiliar with the respective
commands.
How does GUI work?

1. Visual Elements
o GUIs have a lot of visual element such as
icons, buttons, menus, scrollbars to
represent actions, objects and possibly
different information.

2. Input Devices
o Users mostly interact with users using
input devices such as mouse, keyboard
or touch screen. For example; users can
open files by just pointing on it and then
clicking on files the icon.

3. Cursor
o The position of the cursor will indicate
the users actions or focus. All input is
delivered to the required window where
the cursor is located.

4. Commands
o GUIs interpret and execute certain
commands at certain times. For example
when an icon is single clicked it gets
highlighted however when it is double
clicked the file, folder or application is
opened.

Who uses CUI?

1. Developers
o Developers are technology professionals
who have certain programming skills
that allow them to create, build and
maintain software, websites, applications
and other systems. They use their
programming skills to design, debug,
write and execute codes for various
purposes.

2. System Administrators
o System administrators or sysadmins are
IT professionals who manage computer
systems, networks and servers to ensure
they are functioning up to the mark and
meet the needs of the organization they
are working for.

3. Power Users
o Power users are people who are highly
proficient with a product or a system,
and use advance features to get the
most out of the certain system.

Who uses GUI?

1. Computer Users
o GUIs are used to perform tasks on
computers and websites quickly and
intuitively. They are more efficient than
CUIs because programming skills are not
needed.

2. Smartphone Users
o GUIs are used in the operating systems
of smartphones, such as iOS and
Android.
3. Video Game Players
o GUIs are used to interact with games
using graphical elements instead of
typing commands.

4. Web Browser Users

o GUIs are used to interact with games
using graphical elements instead of
typing commands.

5. Software Application Users

o GUIs are used in software applications

like Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe

Creative Cloud.
