How to calculate working days using Excel

Definition of Working Days:


It is the period between two dates after deduction the weekends and the holidays, in other
meaning the net effective days to work.

Calculating Working days


Usually, we need to calculate Working Days between 2 dates. However, to count work
days in Excel you need to identify the weekends and the holidays. Excel can do this for us in
a very simple way using the built-in formulas in Excel. To calculate them in Excel simply use
the formula NETWORKDAYS.INTL, then select the start date, end date, weekend, and
holidays.
Excel will calculate how many days between the start date and end date and deduct the
weekends and holidays.
Let's see how the Excel sheet works.

First step
Assume that the project start date is 1-Jan-2023 and the finish date is 30-Dec-2023.

Make sure that type of “Text” is “Date”.


You need to select the cells and then “Right Click“.

Then, choose “Format


Cells“.

At “Category”, choose “Date”. Then, at “Type” choose the format “DD-MM-YY”.

Second Step
On all days just subtract the finish date and start date, It will give you all the days without
any weekends or holidays.
This is the equation.

All days from the start date to the finish date.

Third Step
Add the holidays of the year.

Final Step
The equation is “=NETWORKDAYS.INTL(Start date ,end date, (weekend),Holidays).

Choose the date under the start date and the date under the finish date then at the
weekend choose which days are your weekend, you have a variety to choose from, If it is
two days or one day only.

Then choose the written holidays.

From 363 actual days starting from the start date till the finish date to 257 working days.

As you subtract the holidays and the two weekend days.
