Hard Questions On Relations and Functions

The document presents a series of mathematical problems related to relations and functions, including finding inverse functions, proving equivalence relations, and determining properties of specific functions. It also involves function composition and explores concepts such as injectivity, surjectivity, and bijectivity. Additionally, it addresses the characteristics of relations and the structure of function sets as monoids.

Hard Questions on Relations and Functions

1. Let \( f: \mathbb{R} o \mathbb{R} \) be defined as \( f(x) = x^2 - 3x + 2 \). Determine the inverse

function \( f^{-1} \), if it exists.

2. Prove that the relation \( R \) on the set of real numbers \( \mathbb{R} \) defined by \( aRb \iff a - b

\) is an equivalence relation.

3. Determine if the function \( g: \mathbb{Z} o \mathbb{Z} \) defined by \( g(n) = n^2 + n + 1 \) is

injective, surjective, or bijective.

4. Let \( h: \mathbb{N} o \mathbb{N} \) be a function defined by \( h(n) = 3n + 7 \). Find the

composition function \( (h \circ h)(n) \).

5. If \( f \) and \( g \) are functions from \( \mathbb{R} \) to \( \mathbb{R} \) such that \( f(x) = 2x + 3 \)

and \( g(x) = x^2 - 1 \), find the composite function \( (f \circ g)(x) \) and \( (g \circ f)(x) \).

6. Show that the function \( f: \mathbb{R} o \mathbb{R} \) defined by \( f(x) = e^x \) is a one-to-one

correspondence.

7. Determine the domain and range of the function \( f(x) = rac{1}{x-2} \).

8. Given the relation \( R = \{(1, 2), (2, 3), (3, 1)\} \) on the set \( \{1, 2, 3\} \), determine if \( R \) is

transitive, symmetric, or reflexive.

9. Find all functions \( f: \mathbb{R} o \mathbb{R} \) such that \( f(f(x)) = x \).

10. Prove that the set of all functions from a finite set \( S \) to itself forms a monoid under function

composition.
