Lecture 30 To 32. Economic Operation of Power Systems - Lecture 1,2,3

The document discusses the economic operation of power systems, focusing on the economic load dispatch problem which aims to minimize the total cost of generating real power while meeting load demands and transmission losses. It outlines different types of economic load dispatch problems, system constraints, and various performance curves relevant to power generation. Additionally, it mentions methods like the Lagrange method for solving economic scheduling, including considerations for generator limits and transmission losses.

Economic Operation of

Power Systems
Economic load dispatch problem
• The Optimal system operation, in general, involves the consideration
of economy of operation, system security, emissions at certain
fossil-fuel plants, optimal releases of water at hydro generation, etc.

• Therefore the main aim in the economic dispatch problem is to

minimize the total cost of generating real power at various stations
while satisfying the loads and the losses in the transmission links.
Different types of economic load dispatch problem

• Unit commitment

• Economic load dispatch

System constraints

• Two types of constraints exist:

1. Equality Constraints
2. Inequality Constraints
Performance curve
• Input-output curve
• Heat rate curve
• Incremental fuel rate curve
• Incremental cost curve
