Q.1. Passage
i. Dowry is the payment in cash or/and kind by the bride's family to the bridegroom's family along with the
giving away of the bride called Kanyadaan.

ii. Dowry is illegal, as it was legally prohibited in 1961. Legal signifies something which is acceptable in
terms of law.

iii. Women are often harrassed, abused, and made miserable if the dowry is amount is not considered
sufficient. They even are burned to death.

iv. The official records of these incidents are low because they are often reported as accidents or suicides.
Still Statics tell that in Delhi, a woman is burned to death almost every 12 hours.

Statics tell that number of dowry murders is increasing, 2,209 women were killed in dowry related
incidents in 1988 & 4,835 were killed for the same reason in 1990.

(i) It is a serious health concern because it leads to obesity, increases risks of developing heart disease,
hypertension, diabetes, and several types of cancer.

(iii) Residents of high-poverty areas who do not have cars are forced to travel long distances on public
transportation to do their grocery shopping or else limit themselves to the food available at local
convenience stores and gas stations.

i) Margie and Tommy had mechanical teachers. They were taught on computers and television screens.
They didn't have a human being as teacher the way we have at present time, to address the students in the
classroom.

Margie hated school because she had a mechanical teacher. It was in her house. She was supposed to sit in
that room alone to complete her home task or assignments. The part Margie hated most was the slot
where she had to put homework and test papers. She thought that the old schools must have been fun
because the students used to sit together in the classroom. They enjoyed, laughed and shouted in the
schoolyard. Children needed company to enhance their skills. If they are isolated, they get depressed and
dejected.

ii) Aurangzeb banned the playing of the pungi because, it had a shrill and unpleasant sound. A barber of a
family of professional musicians, who had access to the royal palace decided to improve the tonal quality
of the pungi. The barber took a pipe with a natural hollow stem that was longer and broader than the
pungi and made seven holes on the body of the pipe. When he played on the pipe, closing and opening
some of the holes, soft and melodious sounds were produced.

Bismillah Khan played the shehnai on 15 August 1947 at Red Fort. He was the first Indian to greet the
nation with his musical instrument. This event was historic because we got independence on that day. He
poured his heart out in the presence of a large number of people including Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru.

iii) Evelyn's deafness didn't hamper her determination. She was not going to give up. She was determined
to lead a normal life. She wanted to pursue her interest in music. One day when she saw a girl playing
xylophone, she decided to play it too. While the most of her teacher discouraged her, Ron Forbes spotted
her talent and potential. From then she learnt to open her mind and body to sounds and vibrations. She
started to feel the music by its vibrations in different parts of her body. Her determination and hard work
led her to capture most of the top awards in music. She became the world's most famous percussionist
with a mastery of thousands of instruments.

Once Evelyn's name was announced in the school for her piano performance, but she did not respond. At
that time, she was just eight years old. Her mother noticed it that time. Slowly with time her performance
in class started to deteriorate. The headmistress called her parents and suggested to take her to a
specialist. It was then her parents came to know about her deafness Evelyn was eleven years old.

iv) Einstein called his desk drawer at the patent office “the bureau of theoretical physics”. Einstein was
actually developing his own ideas in secret and his drawer had all the evidence which could reveal the
secret. That’s why he called his drawer the bureau of theoretical physics.

This poem teaches us that true happiness lies in sharing things with the persons who are in need. If we are
greedy, we cannot have happiness in our life. On the other hand, our charitable nature makes us think
about pains and sorrows suffered by the other people. The charitable people have many friends, and they
are always connected with one another with a strong bond of sentiments. But greedy people have hardly
any friends and they often live alone in the world.

v) The lost child loses interest in the things he had wanted earlier because he is lost in the fair. He is panic-
stricken for being lost. Now the only thing he wants is his family, his parents. He is afraid and feels unsafe
among the crowd of strangers.

The best deed to do is to serve humanity. The Happy Prince could see the sufferings of the people and
wanted to help them. But he was not able to help others in his immobile condition. In order to help the
humanity he requests the swallow to stay with him. The swallow decides to stay with him. The Happy
Prince and the swallow helped the suffering people as much as they could. The Happy Prince gave away all
precious stones engraved on his body to help others. On the other hand, the swallow sacrificed his life in
the service of others. He was obedient to the Happy Prince till his death. It should be our aim to help the
suffering people who are in dire need of help.
