Report 4

The document outlines an experimental study of the magnetic field using two identical flat coils, B1 and B2, to measure the magnetic field B at various distances and current intensities. It details the setup, measurements taken with a Hall sensor, and the relationship between the magnetic fields produced by each coil individually and in combination. The results indicate that the magnetic field varies with distance and current, showing distinct patterns for each coil and their combination.

TP nº4: Experimental study of the magnetic field

1. Objectives
- Become familiar with the use of a teslameter,
- Checking the characteristics of the magnetic field B.

2. Experimental device
The device used comprises two coaxial and identical flat coils B1 and B2 (FIG.1). B1 is mobile
and B2 is fixed. The centers O1 and O2 of the two coils are separated by an adjustable distance
D. The number of turns of each coil is N=132 and their radius is R = 6.5 cm.
The value of the magnetic field is measured using a Hall sensor. The probe can slide on its
support and allows the measurement of the field at different points of the common axis of the
coils. We realize the circuit opposite. The coils are then traversed by a variable current I.

3. Field created by the coil B1

Only one coil B1 is used. We study the magnetic field created by the coil B1 alone, on its axis.
For this we feed the coil B1 only by a current and is fixed at 6.5 cm from the origin O (center of
the immovable coil).

3.2. Variations of the field B1 along the axis (x’Ox )

The intensity of the current is kept constant at 2A. It must remain constant
throughout this manipulation.

4. Field created by the coil B2

We do not move the coil B1, but we only use the coil B2. We study the magnetic
field created by the B2 coil alone, on its axis. The electric current is thus
connected to the coil B2. The intensity is always maintained at 2A and it must
remain constant during all handling.

5. Field created by the association of the two coils

Connect the two coils in series. They are traversed by a current of 2A flowing in
the same direction around the common axis. The centers are always separated by
the distance D = R = 6,5 cm.

What can be concluded on the existing field B between the two coils?
What is the relationship between B, B1 and B2?
The intensity of the current is kept constant at 2A. while we are moving the probe
from 0 cm to 10 cm the field created by B1 is increasing then decreasing while B2
is decreasing, B2 decreased from 0 to 10 cm from 2.75 to 0.58 mT, while B1
increased from 0 to 6cm from 1.01 to 2.73 mT and decreased from 6 to 10 cm
from 2.73 to 2.03 mT.
The relationship between B, B1 and B2 is that B and B1+B2 are almost equal while
increasing from 0 to 4 cm for B from 3.7 to 4.03 mT, and from 0 to 4 cm for B1+B2
from 3.76 to 4.13 mT, then decreasing from 5 to 10 cm for B from 4.01 to 2.58 mT,
and from 5 to 10 cm for B1+B2 from 4.1 to 2.61 mT.
