Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for

Short-Term Mine Planning Engineer


Role:
Short-Term Mine Planning Engineer
Location: Elk Gold Mine, British Columbia, Canada
Purpose: To develop and implement short-term mine plans that ensure safe, efficient, and cost-
effective extraction of gold ore in accordance with the overall mining strategy.

1. Responsibilities

 Develop detailed short-term mine plans (daily, weekly, monthly) based on the life of
mine (LOM) plan.
 Coordinate with operations, geology, and other technical departments.
 Optimize ore extraction and waste management.
 Ensure plans comply with safety, environmental, and legal regulations.
 Monitor and report on plan execution and adjust as necessary.
 Support operational decision-making with technical expertise.

2. Procedures

A. Mine Planning Preparation

Data Collection:

 Gather geological data, including ore body models, grade distribution, and geotechnical
information from the geology department.
 Collect historical production data and current operational metrics.
 Review equipment capabilities and availability from the operations team.

Software and Tools:

 Use mine planning software (Vulcan, MineSight) for designing and optimizing mine
plans.
 Ensure all software and tools are updated and properly configured.

B. Development of Short-Term Plans

Daily and Weekly Plans:

 Design daily and weekly extraction plans, including drilling, blasting, loading, and
hauling schedules.
 Allocate resources (equipment and personnel) based on availability and production
targets.
 Incorporate safety measures and ensure compliance with HSE guidelines.

Monthly Plans:

 Develop monthly mine plans that align with longer-term strategies.


 Identify and plan for critical activities, such as major blasts, equipment maintenance, and
high-grade ore extraction.
 Coordinate with the Chief Engineer to ensure alignment with long-term plans.

C. Plan Optimization

Ore and Waste Management:

 Optimize the sequencing of ore and waste extraction to maximize economic returns and
minimize environmental impact.
 Design waste dumps and ore stockpiles, considering capacity, location, and
environmental constraints.

Cost and Efficiency:

 Analyze cost implications of different plan scenarios.


 Recommend cost-saving measures and efficiency improvements.
 Ensure plans are achievable within budget constraints.

D. Coordination and Communication

Cross-Departmental Collaboration:

 Regularly communicate with the operations team to ensure understanding and feasibility
of plans.
 Work closely with the geology team to update plans based on new geological
information.
 Liaise with the Chief Geologist and Chief Engineer for plan validation and approval.

Operational Support:

 Provide technical support to the operations team during plan execution.


 Adjust plans based on real-time feedback and operational conditions.
 Attend daily and weekly operations meetings to discuss progress and issues.

E. Monitoring and Reporting

Plan Execution:

 Monitor the execution of mine plans through regular site visits and inspections.
 Track performance against plan targets and KPIs.

Reporting:

 Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly reports on plan performance.


 Highlight deviations, issues, and corrective actions.
 Update the mine management team and other stakeholders on progress and challenges.

F. Safety and Environmental Compliance

Safety Standards:

 Ensure all mine plans incorporate safety protocols and risk assessments.
 Conduct safety briefings and participate in safety audits.

Environmental Regulations:

 Integrate environmental management plans and regulations into mine planning.


 Monitor environmental impacts of mining activities and recommend mitigation measures.

G. Continuous Improvement

Review and Feedback:

 Regularly review mine plans and outcomes to identify areas for improvement.
 Seek feedback from operational teams and incorporate lessons learned.

H. Documentation and Record Keeping

 Prepare documentation for audits and inspections as needed.

I. Emergency Response

Emergency Planning:

 Develop contingency plans for potential emergencies (e.g., equipment failure,


environmental incidents).
 Coordinate with the HSE Manager to integrate emergency response plans into mine
operations.

Response and Recovery:

 Support the implementation of emergency response plans.


 Assist in the assessment and recovery process post-incident.

 This SOP must be reviewed and approved by the Chief Engineer and General Manager.
