Access the video at the following link. Answer all questions in complete
sentences and in a different text color.
1. Discuss the reasons why antibiotics are ineffective in treating the common cold.
Antibiotics are ineffective in treating common colds because the common cold,
which is caused by viruses, does not classify as a cell, and antibiotics only attack
living cells.
2. Explain why viruses are not classified as living organisms based on their characteristics.
Viruses are much smaller than cells and come in many shapes. They have some
type of genetic material and a protein coat. It can't reproduce without a host and a
living thing can't be composed of viruses.
3. Describe the general structure of a virus, including its size and key components.
Viruses are much, much smaller than cells, Viruses come in many different
shapes, they al have some type of genetic info, viruses usually have a protein
coat, they need a host in order to reproduce, and they come in different forms.
4. Differentiate between the lytic and lysogenic cycles of viral replication, explaining the key
events in each cycle.
The lytic cycle is where a virus attaches or goes into a cell and ejects its genetic
material into the cell. Then, the genetic material orders the cell to make copies of
the virus which is bad because it then goes to other cells to multiply. However, the
lysogenic cycle is the same thing in the start but this time the genetic material
stays hidden in the host’s genetic material. Then the host replicates its own
genetic material and the viruses which makes it multiply the virus.
5. Discuss the impact of the HIV virus on the human immune system and its mode of
action.
HIV attaches to the helper T cell which is important in protecting the body in the
immune system. Since HIV goes after these cells there is less and less immunity
which makes it so that the immune system is much weaker.
6. Explain the challenges associated with developing treatments for viruses like HIV due to
their ability to mutate.
This is a problem because a treatment developed might not work on the mutated
form.
7. Explore the potential positive roles of viruses in gene therapy and pest control, providing
examples where viruses are beneficial.
One potential benefit is that a virus that targets pest insects could be an
alternative to a chemical pesticide.
8. Analyze the implications of using viral pesticides on the ecosystem, considering both
advantages and potential consequences.
The advantages are that there would be less usage of pesticides and chemicals
but the disadvantages include that the virus could take many days to kill a pest
which is still causing damage.
9. Consider the ethical implications of using viral pesticides as an alternative to chemical
pesticides, discussing potential consequences in the ecosystem.
Using Viral pesticides means that it could have a better affect on the soil but its
consequences could include that it takes a long time to kill an insect allowing it to
still do damage in that time.
10. Reflect on the video content and share any questions or thoughts that arise from the
discussion on viruses.
How are humans currently implementing viral pesticides and if they are creating a
stronger virus to work faster for the insects.
