Basic Concepts
of the Internet
The internet is a wide
network of computers
connected through
cables and wireless
connections around the
world. The name
internet is coined from
its meaning:
interconnection of
computer networks.
How the Internet Works
The internet is a network of computers from homes, schools,
governments, businesses, and organizations around the world. It is a
computer-generated space that contains all kinds of information, which
can be accessed using standard systems.
The World Wide Web or Web
consists of pages of information that can
be accessed using a browser. It is a
software service that operates in the
internet. It is called the Web because its
pages are like a spider web. One page will
lead you to another, and another, and
another, and you will see that the
interconnection and links between pages
do not seem to end.

You can do many tasks when your computer is connected to the
internet. Some of these are as follows:

information about various subjects
and interests. You can use the
internet to search for information
about a topic, news item, or idea.

Internet Browsers
A web browser (or simply browser) is a computer program that
lets you access information on the internet.

Microsoft Edge is the default web browser


in Windows 10 developed by Microsoft
Corporation. It has security features that
defend its users from online phishing
attacks and malware. It is one of the many
examples of web browsers available for
you to use. Mozilla Firefox and Google
Chrome are other examples of web
browsers.

The World Wide Web is a space on the internet that allows
users from all over the world to share information using their computers.
It is commonly called the web. It is composed of different pages that
contain information about different topics. These pages are called web
pages.

A website or site is a collection of web pages that can be
accessed through the internet. Because they contains information about
similar topics, these pages are linked to each other. A website is usually
created by a person, group or company.

A website has a home page. It is the first page you see when
you go to a website. On this page, you will see what is inside the
website. For example, the picture below shows the home page of SLCI
portal.

A web page is a single document in the World Wide Web that
contains information. A web page may contain text, pictures, music, and
videos.

hyperlinks. Hyperlinks are components within the web page that you
can click. They can be in the form of picture, a button, or text.
Website Addresses
There are many web pages in the internet. You use a web
browser to access them. A web browser can recognize the location of a
web page by its web address. That is, web browser accesses a web
page throughits website address, which is also known as its uniform
resource locator (URL). The URL directs to a location where a file, web
page, or a resource is hosted. Some examples of URL are
https://www.youtube.com and https://www.roblox.com .
