Now we are going to go through using the Microsoft Purview service.

First of all, what is Microsoft Purview?


This is kind of a data governance tool.
It can be used for data security and compliance as well.
See, as an organization, you might be having your data scattered across
various data sources.
You could have data in Azure Data Lake.
Within Azure Data Lake, you could be having your data across multiple
folders across multiple files.
Your data could be in Azure Synapse.
It could be in a variety of, let's say, Azure based services or even software
as a service as well.
So data engineers within the company might not even know that data
actually exists.
Like for example, let's say they are searching for a particular data asset.
They might not even know if that data asset exists or not.
But with the help of Microsoft Purview, that gives you kind of an overall
view, an overall picture
of the different data assets that you have.
Your data engineers can actually search for those data assets and make
use of them accordingly.
So yes, making use of data is obviously very, very important.
But you have to know that the data actually exists.
If it doesn't exist, how are you going to make use of it?
So as a data engineer, yes, you have to make use of the data at hand.
But first you have to understand that the data exists with the help of
Microsoft Purview, you can maintain
something known as a data map.
Here you can scan your data stores, extract metadata, and understand
the data assets that you have.
You can use a data catalog to browse for assets based on the metadata.
You can also get an entire data lineage of your data assets, the various
stages that the data goes
through.
So now in the subsequent chapters, we are going to look at examples
when it comes to using this particular
service.

just like a map shows where every book is.

2. Data Catalog: This is like a catalog where you can search for data. It tells you what data is available
and where to find it.

3. Data Classification: It labels data to show what kind of data it is, like putting stickers on books to
show if they are fiction, non-fiction, or reference.

Real-World Example

Imagine a company that makes toys. They have lots of data about how many toys they make, how
many they sell, and what customers think about their toys. Azure Purview helps them:
