1. Define Irms (Root mean square current). Derive an expression for Irms in terms of I0 (Peak value of
alternating current).
2. A light bulb is rated at 100W for a 220 V supply. Find (a) the resistance of the bulb; (b) the peak
voltage of the source; and (c) the rms current through the bulb.
3. A pure inductor of 25.0 mH is connected to a source of 220V. Find the inductive reactance and rms
current in the circuit if the frequency of the source is 50 Hz.
4. For a reference voltage E = E0 Sinwt, write the expression for instantaneous current I for the following:
a) AC circuit containing resistance only. b) AC circuit containing inductance only. c) AC circuit
containing capacitance only.
5. A lamp is connected in series with a capacitor. Predict your observations for dc and ac connections.
What happens in each case if the capacitance of the capacitor is reduced?
6. A 15.0 μF capacitor is connected to a 220 V, 50 Hz source. Find the capacitive reactance and the
current (rms and peak) in the circuit. If the frequency is doubled, what happens to the
capacitive reactance and the current?
7. A light bulb and an open coil inductor are connected to an ac source through a key as shown in Fig.
The switch is closed and after sometime, an iron rod is inserted into the interior of the inductor.
The glow of the light bulb (a) increases; (b)decreases; (c) is unchanged, as the iron rod is inserted.
8. Draw the phasor diagram representing E, I, E 0 and I0 for the following circuits:
a) AC circuit containing resistance only. b) AC circuit containing inductance only. c) AC circuit
containing capacitance only. d) RLC in series
11. A sinusoidal voltage of peak value 283 V and frequency 50 Hz is applied to a series LCR
circuit in which R = 3 Ω, L = 25.48 mH, and C = 796 μF . Find (a) the impedance of the circuit; (b)
the phase difference between the voltage across the source and the current; (c) the power dissipated
in the circuit; and (d) the power factor.
12. Define Q factor of resonance circuit? Write all the three expressions for Q? What is its SI unit? Draw
I0 vs w graph for two resistors 10 ohm and 100 ohm.
13. Suppose the frequency of the source in the previous example (Q11) can be varied. (a) What
is the frequency of the source at which resonance occurs? (b) Calculate the impedance, the
current, and the power dissipated at the resonant condition.
14. Write the analogies in electrical system for the following quantities:
15. Draw a well labeled diagram of Transformer and explain it principle, construction and working. A
power transmission line feeds input power at 2300 V to a step-down transformer with its primary
windings having 4000 turns. What should be the number of turns in the secondary in order to get output
power at 230 V?
16. Draw a well labeled diagram of AC generator and explain it principle, construction and working.
Kamla peddles a stationary bicycle. The pedals of the bicycle are attached to a 100 turn coil of area
0.10 m2. The coil rotates at half a revolution per second and it is placed in a uniform magnetic field of
0.01 T perpendicular to the axis of rotation of the coil. What is the maximum voltage generated in the
coil?
