Resistor

Color Coding
grade 9 electrical/ electronic
LEARNING
OBJECTIVE

Identify the colors of resistor color coding

according to the standard chart.

Calculate the resistance value of a resistor

based on its color bands.

Appreciate the importance of determining the

resistance value and tolerance of a resistor
What is a
Resistor?
Resistors are passive electrical
components that limit or regulate the
flow of electric current in electrical
circuits.
A resistor in an electrical circuit acts like a traffic
bottleneck, slowing down the flow of electricity
(current). It does this by opposing the flow of
electrons, which is what makes up an electrical
current.
key point
Resistors restrict the flow
of current.

Measured in Ohms (Ω).

Used to control voltage,

current, and power in
circuits.
Resistor Color RESISTOR

Coding
Resistor color coding is a
standardized system used to Ω
identify the resistance value and OHMMETER
tolerance of a resistor. This
system is universally recognized by
electronics professionals, making it
easy to identify and use resistors
in various applications.
Each color band represents a numerical value. This value is
defined by a universal color code chart, which we'll explore in
the next slide.

Bands indicate:
First three bands: These bands represent the resistance
value of the resistor. The first band represents the first
digit of the resistance value, the second band represents
the second digit, and the third band represents the
multiplier.

Fourth band: This band represents the multiplier, which

indicates the power of ten by which the first two digits
are multiplied.

Fifth band: This band represents the tolerance, which

indicates the acceptable range of variation in the
actual resistance value.

Sixth band: This band represents the temperature

coefficient, which indicates how much the resistance
changes with temperature. This band is only present on
high-precision resistors.
Activity
The students are grouped into four (4) and each group are given a box. In each
box there is a papers numbered 1-4 or 1-5 it depends. Now number 1
corresponds to the first digit in resistor's resistance value and so on. Now here is
the twist. To determine the color of each digit to multiplier up to the tolerance,
students are going to solve a riddles. The answer to every riddles are colors of a
resistor that they need to calculate to find its resistance value and tolerance. After
answering, they are going to discuss it in front of the class. Points are given
guided with the following rubrics:
Assessment
Direction: Multiple choice. Choose the best answer. Write
the letter only.
