Electrical/Electronics Grade 9

I. OBJECTIVES

At the end of this lesson, the grade 9 students are expected to:

A. Identify the colors of resistor color coding according to the standard chart.

B. Calculate the resistance value of a resistor base on its color bands.

C. Appreciate the importance of determining the resistance value and tolerance of a

resistor through color coding.

II. SUBJECT MATTER

A. TOPIC: Resistor Color Coding

B. ROCESS SKILL: Observing, Analyzing, Interpreting,

Applying.

C. REFERENCES: Books- Simple Electronics by Michael

Enriques, et.al. pp 103-107.
- Technology and Livelihood Education
by Estifania Gloria L. Lee, pp 269-271.

D. MATERIALS: Whiteboard, markers, Resistor color

code chart, Power point presentation,
Visual aid.

E. VALUE FOCUS: - Importance of standardization:

Understanding how color coding provides
a universal language for electronics.
- Safety in electronics:
Recognizing the importance of correctly
identifying resistor values to prevent
circuit damage or hazards.
- Practical application:
Appreciating how color coding is used in
real-world electronics projects and
troubleshooting.

F. INTEGRATION: Electronics, Electrical Engineering,

Physics (Ohm's Law).

III. PROCEDURE:

A. Preparatory Routine:

1. Prayer
2. Greetings
-Greet the students then ask them to seat properly.
3. Checking of attendance
4. Classroom rules

B. Review:
Briefly review the concept of resistors and their function
in electrical circuits.

Ask students: What is a resistor? What are its main

characteristics?

C. Motivation:

Word scramble puzzles:

1. NABDS- Bands
2. TANOLCEER- Tolerance
3.TCESRISEAN- Resistance
4.SMOH- Ohms

D. Presentation:

The teacher will present the topic.

Unlocking of technical terms:

Resistor- a electric components that resists the flow of current.

Resistance- the amount of opposition to the flow of electric
current.
Ohms- is a unit of measurement of resistance, uses the symbol of Greek letter omega.
Tolerance- percentage of error in the resistor’s resistance.

E. Lesson proper:

1. Activity
Video showing activity:
Ask the students if they know what a resistor is. After the class varied
answers, show them a resistor that you have prepared for them to see what
an actual resistor looks like. Then show them a short video presentation
about resistor and its function.

2. Analysis
After showing the video to the class let them give their own opinion about the
video. Ask them questions like;

➤ Based on the video I have shown to you, can anybody now tell me what is a
resistor?;

➤ Why is resistor important in an electrical circuit?; and

➤Why do we have to study about resistor and it's resistance value through it's
color codes?

3. Abstraction
Discuss what is a resistor and it's function in the electrical circuit.
Ask the students what they notice on the resistor.
Introduce the Resistor's Color Coding Table.
Proceed to the lesson about Resistor Color Coding.
Discuss the process or steps in determining the resistance value of a resistor
through color coding..

Let the students do a boardwork activity on how to determine resistor's value

through color coding.

4. Application
The students are grouped into two (2) and each group are given a box. In each
box there is a papers numbered 1-4 or 1-5 it depends. Now number 1
corresponds to the first digit in resistor's resistance value and so on. Now here is
the twist. To determine the color of each digit to multiplier up to the tolerance,
students are going to solve a riddles. The answer to every riddles are colors of a
resistor that they need to calculate to find its resistance value and tolerance. After
answering, they are going to discuss it in front of the class. Points are given
guided with the following rubrics:

Criteria Points
Cooperation 15 pts.
Correct color from riddles 15 pts.
Presentation/Discussion 20 pts.
Total: 50 pts.

IV. ASSESSMENT:

Direction: Multiple choice. Choose the best answer. Write

the letter only.

1. What is the value of a resistor with the following set of colors:

Green-Black-Orange- Gold?

a) 500 ohms 5%
b) 5k ohms 5%
c) 50k ohms 5%
d) 500k ohms 5%

2. What is the color of the tolerance representing 5%?

a) Gold
b) Black
c) Orange
d) Silver

3. In the 2 band digit of the resistor color coding, 5 is color?

a) Brown
b) Green
c) Red
d) Yellow

4. What is the color of the tolerance representing 10%?

a) Silver
b) Gold
c) Green
d) Black

5. In the 1 band digit of the resistor color coding, 8 is color?

a) Orange
b) Silver
c) Grey
d) White

V. ASSIGNMENT:

Instructions: For each resistor, identify the color bands and

calculate the resistance value and tolerance.
Write your answers in the table below, submit next meeting.

Resistor Color Bands Resistance value Tolerance (%)

( Ohms)
A Brown- Black-
Orange- Gold
B Red- Violet- Yellow-
