Q 18. Assertion-(A) Brown fumes are produced when lead nitrate is heated.
Reason (R) - Nitrogen dioxide gas is produced as a by product due to the decomposition of lead
nitrate.
Q-19.Assertion(A)- the white light is dispersed into seven constituent colours when passed through prism
Reason(R)- Different colours of light bend through different angle when they pass through prism

Q-38. The thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland located at the base of your
neck just below the Adam’s apple. It is part of an intricate network of glands
called the endocrine system. The endocrine system is responsible for
coordinating many of your body’s activities. The thyroid gland manufactures
hormones that regulate your body’s metabolism.Several different disorders can
arise when your thyroid produces too much hormone (hyperthyroidism) or not
enough (hypothyroidism). Four common disorders of the thyroid are Hashimoto’s
disease, Graves’ disease, goitre and thyroid nodules.
In hyperthyroidism, the thyroid gland is overactive. It produces too much of its
hormone. Hyperthyroidism affects about 1 percent of women. It’s less common in
men.Graves’ disease is the most common cause of hyperthyroidism, affectin
about 70 percent of people with an overactive thyroid. Nodules on the thyroid – a
condition called toxic nodular goitre or multinodular goitre can also cause the
gland to overproduce its hormones.
Excessive thyroid hormone production leads to symptoms such as : restlessness
nervousness, racing heart, irritability, increased sweating, shaking, anxiety,
trouble sleeping, thin skin, brittle hair and nails, muscle weakness, weight loss,
bulging eyes (in Graves’ disease).
(i)What is thyroid gland ?
(ii) What is the function of the thyroid gland ?
(iii) Name some common disorders of the thyroid.
(iv) Give some symptoms of hyperthyroidism.
Q 39. When light goes from one medium to another medium having different
optical densities then refraction of light rays takes place. All the air in the
atmosphere is not at the same temperature some of the air layers of the
atmosphere are cold ( optically denser).whereas other layers of the atmosphere
are comparatively warm (optically rarer).so in the atmosphere we have air layers
having different optical density
Atmospheric refraction is the deviation of light from a straight line as it passes
through the atmosphere due to the variation in air density.such refraction can
raise or lower or strech or shorten the image of distant object and can also make
distant object appear to twinkle or shimmer.
Read the above passage carefully and give the answer of the following
questions
Q-1.what is atmospheric refraction? Q-2. what causes atmospheric refraction?
Q-3. How does atmospheric refraction affect the Apparent position of stars?
Q-4. By how much the day would have been shorter if the earth had no
atmosphere?
