ASK for volunteers to define and/or give their understanding of the phrase
Learning and Development.

Learning refers to acquiring new or modifying existing knowledge,

behaviors, skills, values, or preferences and may involve processing
different types of information. Learning does not happen in a blink of an
eye - you need to nurture it. Time and effort are two vital factors you need
to learn effectively.

On the other hand, Development is a process of honing and improving a

particular learning such as a behavior, skill, and/or a value.

Slide 4

Why is Learning and Development important? Your learning in college

serves as your ticket as you enter a new chapter in your life. Learning does
not stop in school – learning is a continuous process that you should not
set a deadline on. It continues as you enter the IT-BPM industry.

Slide 5

STATE that there would be an instance in your professional career when

you will face a challenging situation. Do not get discouraged when this
happens. STOP and THINK to be able to carry out the proper action.
Always consider the challenging situation and/or failure as a learning
opportunity, and make necessary actions to turn this into SUCCESS. This is
where learning and development enter the limelight.

SEGUE: To further understand the importance of Learning and

Development, let’s have an activity!

Ways to Have a Sustainable Professional Career

Slide 8

Keep in mind that the greatest asset of a company is its People. The people
and/or employees working in an organization are considered the greatest
asset because they make things happen – they are the ones who face and
satisfy the customers and clients in an organization.

STATE that as you start your career in the IT-BPM industry, it is imperative
to come up with ways to have a sustainable professional career, even if

Service Culture Guide Session 9

Date Developed:2013 page 161 SMPSVCCU009 v2013
your company does not have its own formal learning and development
program. This means that you are the one in-charge of your own growth
and success.

Slide 9

DISCUSS the ways to have a sustaining professional career.

Slide 10

A mentor is different from a role model. A mentor is someone who knows

you, your strengths and your weaknesses. A company usually has a
mentoring program that is made available to employees. And at times, in a
team, a mentor is assigned responsibility for the growth of the team
members. If this opportunity is available, go ahead and take advantage of
it.

That when looking for a mentor, make sure he is of a higher level and
works in the same field. The work experience of such a mentor is valuable.

Service Culture Guide Session 9

Date Developed:2013 page 162 SMPSVCCU009 v2013
Slide 11

A role model is a person you would want to emulate in terms of career

and/or lifestyle. In this industry, having a role model has been proven
effective as it helps the employee succeed in his chosen career.

STATE that though it is encouraged to emulate a person professionally, it is

also recommended that you maintain your individuality.

Even your role models have role models. That is how important it is in
helping shape your professional career.

Slide 12

Learning does not have to happen inside the classroom. Knowledge is no

longer confined to books and does not have to always come from the
professor. There are universities and colleges nowadays that offer distance
or online learning programs. These are programs you can take from the
convenience of your own home. There are also various websites, blogs and
videos available online that can provide valuable information for you to
learn. All you need to do is access the web.

Service Culture Guide Session 9

Date Developed:2013 page 163 SMPSVCCU009 v2013
Slide 13

STATE That As a professional, there are online courses you can enroll in,
useful web sites that provide material you can print and read for later use.
It is more convenient nowadays to do a self-paced study and, most of the
time, it is done online.

You are responsible for your own learning and development. Although I
most companies, your career path can be mapped out at the onset, there
are times when it depends on how you see yourself as a contributor in the
organization. Sometimes you may be given a responsibility that you
initially feel you are not that prepared for. But you will need to step up
and do the best you can through study.

Transition Before proceeding to the next topic, ask the participants if they
have any questions – entertain questions and park those that you cannot
answer. Make sure to get back to them with an answer the next day.

Slide 14

Another way to have a sustainable professional career is by goal setting.

Goal setting allows an individual to achieve a desired target in a span of
time. Short and long-term goals can be used to categorize your targets.

Service Culture Guide Session 9

Date Developed:2013 page 164 SMPSVCCU009 v2013
STATE that Goal Setting is used in the industry to keep the employee
motivated, for the employee to have a sense of fulfillment particularly if
the goals set are met or even exceeded.

Goals are set for an employee as a means to determine what is expected of

him and how these expectations are being met.

Slide 15

How do you know you’re setting the right goals? Your goals must be
S.M.A.R.T.

Specific - Be clear and unambiguous when setting your goal. Don’t leave
room for guessing.
Measurable – Set a goal that allows you to measure that it is being
achieved.
Attainable – Ask yourself, “Is this realistic and attainable?”
Relevant – Create a goal with importance and meaning. Make sure the
effort is worth it to you.
Time-bound – Commit to a deadline. Open-ended goals tend to be
forgotten

Give an example of a personal SMART goal:

To lose 10 pounds in 6 months.

It is specific. It didn’t simply say, “Lose weight.”

It is measurable. You’ll know how much weight you’re expected to lose
and you can measure it within the period. It is attainable. It is relevant to
you. And it is time-bound – in 6 months.

Ask for 3-4 examples from the class.

Slide 16

“Facebook” (www.facebook.com)
is now a fad and being used not only as a Social Networking web site, but
also as a means for others to establish their professional network with
business, individuals, and non-profit organizations, to name a few.

Slide 17

Why is it recommended to establish different networks particularly those

that are related to your field?

1. It will allow you to exchange ideas with these groups and, at the
same time, provide you the opportunity for growth. Some
professional groups conduct free seminars; if you are a member of
the group, you may even avail of discounts for their services. These
are just some of the benefits of establishing a professional
network/ acquaintances. In short you gain access to industry best
practices.
2. Avenue for skill set enhancement
3. Increased career and business opportunities
4. Lasting friendships

Date Developed:2013 page 166 SMPSVCCU009 v2013
Slide 18

Lastly, participate and volunteer when you can. Volunteering for a work-
related activity allows you to market your skills and be exposed to different
aspects of your profession.

STATE that whenever you have free time and you feel that you are capable
skill-wise and will benefit from volunteering, by all means go ahead and
participate.
