Tutorial_4

The document contains a tutorial sheet with four problems related to signal processing, specifically focusing on AM signals, square-law devices, DSB-SC signals, and coherent detection. It asks for the generation of AM signals, conditions for recovering message signals, effects of frequency errors in coherent detection, and the output of a narrow-band filter applied to a square-law device. Each problem requires analytical solutions and understanding of signal characteristics and filtering effects.

ELL311: Tutorial Sheet 4

Problem 1:
Consider the system shown below. Assume the non-linear device is a square-law device with the input-
output characteristic given by 𝑣! (𝑡) = 𝑎" 𝑣" (𝑡) + 𝑎! 𝑣"! (𝑡).

(a) If we would like to generate an AM signal using this system, what additional blocks and
constraints would be required for this.
(b) Determine the amplitude sensitivity of this AM signal.

Problem 2:
If the input signal to the square-law device in the above question is an AM wave, determine the
condition(s) for which the message signal can be recovered from the output of the square-law device.

Problem 3:
A DSB-SC signal is demodulated by applying it to a coherent detector. If the local carrier frequency
of the detector has a frequency error of ∆𝑓, with respect to the carrier frequency of the incoming DSB-
SC signal, what is its effect on the output of the coherent detector.

Problem 4:
Consider a DSB-SC signal 𝑠(𝑡) which is applied to a square-law device characterized by 𝑦(𝑡) =
𝑠 ! (𝑡). If the output 𝑦(𝑡) is then applied to a narrow-band filter with passband amplitude of 1, mid-
band frequency 2𝑓# , and bandwidth ∆𝑓. Assume ∆𝑓 is small enough to treat the spectrum of 𝑦(𝑡)
as essentially constant inside the passband of the filter. Show that the filter output 𝑣(𝑡) is
approximately given by
𝐴"!
𝑣 (𝑡) ≈ 𝐸∆𝑓 cos(4𝜋𝑓! 𝑡)

where 𝐸 is energy of the message signal.
