Exercise No.3
UREA MOLASSES MINERAL BLOCK

Introduction

Urea-Molasses Mineral Block (UMMB) is a food supplement for cows, carabaos,

sheep, and goats. This is a block made up of urea, molasses or honey, cement, rice bran,
vitamins and minerals like dicalcium phosphate, and salt. Feeding UMMB is regarded as
one of the most important methods of reducing the loss of essential and substantial food
for animals, particularly during the warmer months of the year. UMMB is fed by the
animals' "licking." Feeding is simple because UMMB tastes good to the animals. Place
the UMMB in the animal feeder and leave it there until the animals' daily nutritional needs
are met.

Objectives:

1. To identify the different materials needed when making UMMB

2. To be able to help the farmers in supplementing the energy or heat, minerals and
protein for the animals by making a UMMB

Materials:

3.8 kg molasses basin

1 kg urea weighing scale
3.8 kg rice bran D1 1 kg cement
300g dicalcium phosphate 100g salt

Methodology:

1. Prepare and weigh ingredients according to proper proportions:

2. Prepare the mixing pot. Use a cook ware with a wide mouth like a vat. Old tires can
be used a support to the vat.
3. Pour honey into the vat. Slowly add urea while slowly stirring the mixture. Make
sure there are no lumps of urea in the mixture.
4. Add di-calcium phosphate and salt, stirring should be continuous.
5. Add cement and continue stirring.
6. Rice bran should be added last. In this case, it’s better to use hand in mixing or a
cement mixer to mix the ingredients thoroughly.
7. Pour the mixture into molds to form the blocks. Each block may weigh 1 to 5 kilos
each
8. Wrap each block with plastic and arrange in a box. Wait for 1 to 2 weeks before
feeding the block to the animals.

Table 1. Proportion and Costs of Ingredients in Making UMMB

Ingredients Proportion Cost

Molasses 3.8 kg 174
Cement 1 kg 15
Salt 100 g 5
Urea 1 kg 38
Rice bran D1 3.8 kg 40
Dicalcium phosphate 300 g 0

Is the making of UMMB can be afford by the farmers? Is the cost proportional to the
benefits a farmer and the animal may get from UMMB?
Answer:
Making the UMMB is affordable by the farmers because the cost of its ingredients
is not high. Some ingredients can be substituted like the dicalcium phosphate, if there is
no available in the market, the egg shell can do. The cost of UMMB is just proportional to
the benefits that the farmer and animal can get because of its nutritional value. The
nitrogen, energy and minerals that the animal can gain from UMMB is very helpful to
achieve their optimum growth and performance for the farmers, thus, the farmer can
benefit from his animal for labor, earning money and food in the table.

Questions to Answer:

1. What are the challenges you encountered in making this activity?

Answer:
Difficulties are encountered in collecting the ingredients for UMMB. The
ingredient that is not easy to get is the molasses and D1 rice bran because it is not
available in my barangay. I have to go to city and bought the molasses in quite
expensive. The transport fare is expensive as well because of travel restriction, it
is now doubled. Another challenge is the mixing and molding the mixture. While
mixing, my hands gets hurt and the mixture is slightly hard which makes it difficult
to mix manually.

2. What are the precautions when making UMMB that should the farmers be aware
of?
Answer:
The farmers should know that in making UMMB they must use personal
protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves and facemask to protect them from
potential harm. Ingredients like salt, cement and urea may cause skin irritation so
safety first is the priority concern. Meanwhile, farmers must know that UMMB
should be feed only for sheep, goats, carabaos and cattle. It is not feed for
monogastric animals like pigs, horses and donkeys. It is also not to feed in young
ruminant like lambs. UMMB is not a basic ration meaning it is only a feed
supplement. Do not feed the block to the ruminant that is empty stomach. Do not
feed it excessively because it can poison the animal. There is a recommendation
from Feed Tech Expo in India that blocks fed to sheep and goat should be limited
to 100 grams per day while for cattle and carabao should be limited to 500 to 700
grams per day. Do not dissolved the block in water to avoid over consumption.
Give water to the animal feed with UMMB in ad libitum.

3. Explain urea toxicity to ruminant animals.

Answer:
The nitrogen comes out from urea in the rumen as ammonia and can be
utilized by rumen microflora to create protein in the body of ruminant. The
synthesized protein becomes usable to the animal through digestion and
adsorption. When the urea is consumed too much then ammonia is absorbed from
rumen into the blood. The ammonia is converted back to urea in the liver and
discharged by the kidneys. This channel can conveniently be overpowered when
excess ammonia and urea circulate in the blood, creating toxic. The continuous
use of urea in ruminant feed can be fatal.

4. Why is UMMB important to animals?

Answer:
UMMB is important to ruminant animals because it can improve the
fermentation of fibrous materials and also increase the microbial protein and
volatile fatty acids in the rumen. UMMB helps improve the nutrients utilization in
ruminants because of molasses with nitrogen, minerals and vitamins thus
enhances growth rate and reproductive performance.
