solutions and box your final answers. Due on Saturday, 13 May 2023, 6:00 P.M.

1) What is the equivalent area in in2 for a conductor 336,400 circular mil?

2) Give the color code for a resistor having a resistance value of 150kΩ ±10%.

3) An electric stove with four burners and an oven is used in preparing a meal as follows:
Burner 1: 20 minutes Burner 2: 40 minutes
Burner 3: 15 minutes Burner 4: 45 minutes
Oven: 30 minutes
If each burner is rated at 1.2 kW and the oven at 1.8 kW, and electricity costs P9.50 per kWh,
calculate the cost of electricity used in preparing the meal.

4) A piece of silver wire has a resistance of 1 Ω. What will be the resistance of manganin
wire of one-third the length and one-third the diameter, if the specific resistance of
manganin is 30 times that of silver.

5) A wire made of platinum has a resistance of 3.146 Ω at 40°C and 3.767 Ω at 100°C. Find
the resistance at 0°C and the temperature-coefficient of resistance at 40°C.

6) The field windings of a series motor has a resistance of 120 ohms at 15°C. After running
for two hours, the resistance increases to 140 ohms. If the temperature coefficient of
the windings at 0°C is 0.004, find the new temperature of the windings.

7) Find the current flow through a light bulb from a steady movement of:
a. 60 C in 4 s
b. 15 C in 2 min
c. 1 x 1022 electrons in an hour

8) An electric heater consumes 3.6 MJ when connected to a 250 V supply for 40 minutes.
Find the power rating of the heater and the current taken from the supply.

9) A certain capacitor stores 50 μC with 10 V across its plates. What is its capacitance in
units of microfarads?

12) Determine the capacitance of a parallel plate capacitor having a plate area of 0.01 m 2

22) Using Millman’s theorem, determine the current through and voltage across the load

23) The capacitance of a capacitor formed by two parallel metal plates, each having an
effective surface area of 50 cm2 and separated by a dielectric 1 mm thick, is 0.0001 μF.
The plates are charged to a p.d. of 200 V. Calculate (a) the charge stored (b) the electric
flux density (c) the relative permittivity of the dielectric.

24) A cell supplies a load current of 0.5 A for a period of 20 hours until its terminal voltage
falls to an unacceptable level. How long it could be expected to supply a current of 100
mA?

25) A parallel plate capacitor has 3 dielectrics with relative permittivities of 5.5, 2.2 and 1.5
respectively. The area of each plate is 100 cm2 and thickness of each dielectric 1 mm.
Calculate the stored charge in the capacitor when a potential difference of 5,000 V is
applied across the composite capacitor so formed.

26) A magnetic core in the form of a closed circular ring has a mean length of 30 cm and a
cross-sectional area of 1 cm2. The relative permeability of iron is 2400. What direct-
current will be needed in the coil of 2000 turns uniformly wound around the ring to
create a flux of 0.20 mWb in iron? If an air-gap of 1 mm is cut through the core
perpendicular to the direction of this flux, what current will now be needed to maintain
the same flux in the air gap?

27) An AC voltage of 50 Hz has a maximum value of 50 V. What is its value after 1/600
second after the instant the instant the current is zero?

28) How much time does it take for 60 Hz alternating current to travel through 180°?

29) Twelve ampere effective alternating current will have the same heating effect as _____
