Grating Exp.

The document outlines an experiment to determine the wavelength of prominent spectral lines of mercury using a diffraction grating and a spectrometer. It includes the formula for calculating wavelength, observations of spectral lines, and precautions to ensure accurate measurements. Results are presented in a table comparing observed wavelengths with standard values and calculating percentage error.

Object: To determine the wavelength of prominent spectral lines of mercury

by plane diffraction grating.

Apparatus: A diffraction grating, spectrometer, mercury lamp, prism, reading lens,
etc.

Formula Used:

The wavelength à of any spectral line can be calculated by the formula

(a + b) sin 0 =n

or
(a+b)sinb
n
(etd)
where (a + b) = gratingelement,
e = angle of diffraction,
and n=order of the spèçtrum.

Precautions:

) Before performing the experiment, the spectrometer should be

adjusted.
ii) Grating should beset normalto the incident light.
ii) Grating should not be touched by fingers.
iv) While taking observations, telescope and prism table should be kept
fixed.
