Maths Lab Activity 3

The document outlines a method for graphing the sine function using mirror reflection about the line y=x. It includes materials needed, prerequisite knowledge on inverse functions, and step-by-step construction instructions. The result demonstrates that the graphs of sin x and its inverse are mirror images of each other across the line y=x.

AlM : To draw the graph of sin x, using the graph of sin x and
concept of mirror reflection (about the line y = x).

Material Required
Cardboard, white chart paper, scale, coloured pens, gum, pencil, eraser, cutter, some nails and some
thin wires.

Prerequisite Knowledge
Inverse of a Function
Let f : A ’ Bbe a bijection. Then a function g : B ’A which associates each element ye B to a unique
element xe Asuch that f(r) = y is called the inverse of f. ie. f()= y e g(y) = x
The inverse of f is generally denoted by .
Thus, if f:A’ Bis bijection, then f:B+ Ais such that f() =y r)=x
Mirror Reflection
The graph of a bijection fand its inverse f are related to each other. If(a, b) is a point on the graph of
f then b= fla) and a =f(). As, be domain of f', therefore (b, f'(b) is a point on the graph of f. But,
(b. ()) =(b, a). Therefore, (b, a) also lies on the graph of f. Thus, if (a, b) is a point on the graph of f,
then (b, a) is a point on the graph of f. But, (a, b) and (6, a) are reflections of one another in the line
y=x Thus, the graph of f may be obtained by reflecting the graph of f in the line mirror y=x. So, the
graphs of fand f are mirror images of each other in the line mirror y=X

points fix a wire.
9. From the nails N, ,N,,Ng,N4, draw perpendicular on the line y =x and produce these lines

I,I,,I, ,I, and fix nails at these points.
10. Similarly, repeat the above activity on the other side of X-axis and fix nails at I,,I,, I,, I
11. Join the nails on both sides of the line y =xby a tight wire. The curve so obtained shows the
graph of y= sinx.
