Environment: An
Overview

To have a meaningful and successful accomplishment in this FS episode, be sure

to read through the whole episode before participating and assisting in your FS 2
Resource Teacher’s class. Note all the information you will need in tasks you will need to
do before working on this episode.

Target Your Intended Learning Outcomes

At the end of this episode, I must be able to revisit the concept of learning
environment in the context of the current teaching and learning situation.

Clarify Your Task

Overview of the Learning Environment
A learning environment, traditionally called the classroom, is a space in a school
that supports student learning. It is a self-contained area where teacher teaches and
children learn. In the classroom are chairs or tales for students and a front table for the
teachers. This is a traditional face-to-face classroom. Most often the students should face
the teacher as the chairs are arranged hat way. But as teaching delivers change to enhance
learning, modification in the seating arrangement evolved ad more opportunity for the
learners to move about for cooperative learning was addressed.
A conducive learning environment should have the following characteristics:
 Flexibility – there is opportunity to have small groups, movable walls.
 Openness – Learning corners/areas which could be shared.
 Accesses to resources – Audio-visual materials are ready and open for use.
 Physical classroom – Space is clean and safe.
 Psychological atmosphere – It is friendly and accommodating.

The classroom climate nurtures the intellectual, physical, social and emotional
development of the students.

EPISODE 5: Preparing the Learning Environment: An Overview  36

Here are some specific strategies for developing the optimal classroom climate.
You may consider these.
1. Learning environment addresses both physical and psychological needs of the
students for security and order, love and belonging, personal power and
competence, freedom and fun.
2. Create a sense of order. For example, teacher should teach students how to
 Enter the classroom and become immediately engaged in the activity;
 Distribute and collect materials;
 Find out about missed assignments due to absence and how to make up for
them;
 Get the teacher’s attention without disrupting the class and
 Arrange desks, tables quickly and quietly for various purposes.
3. Greet learners as they enter your face-to-face or online classroom.
4. In a healthy and conducive learning environment, everybody belongs and knows
each other.
5. Encourage class building activities like games and tem activities.
6. In a conducive learning environment, success whether small or big is recognized,
and celebrated.

Both approaches, either the traditional face-to-face or online, lead to positive

result but in different ways, so usually in practice both approaches are combined

Learning environment can be traditional (F2F), virtual (on-line) or a combination (Hybrid).

Participate and Assist

What will you do to assist your mentor in setting up a conducive learning environment in
the following conditions:

EPISODE 5: Preparing the Learning Environment: An Overview  37

1. Bulletin Board Display

I can assist my resource teacher in planning and setting up the bulletin board.
Additionally, I will support him/her in creating attractive displays that align with
the current curriculum and class themes. This collaboration will enhance the
visual learning environment for students.

2. Small Group Discussion

I can assist my mentor with organizing group assignments and setting guidelines
for discussions. Additionally, I will help him/her monitor the time during these
discussions to guarantee that every group has a fair chance to engage. This will
ensure a balanced and organized discussion environment. Moreover, my support
will enhance the overall effectiveness of the facilitation.
3. Checking class attendance in a virtual classroom (i.e. google meet or zoom)

I will technical assistance to students struggling with the virtual classroom

platform, which may involve helping them with the basic login process or
resolving common problems. Additionally, I will maintain a list of students to
record their attendance as either present or absent. This will ensure a smoother
experience for all participants in the virtual learning environment.

Notice
Learning Environment 1:
 What have you noticed of the display in the class bulletin board? What
message of theme does it convey?

The Board Display fulfills its role by providing information and updates
regarding classroom-related topics. I've also observed that the bulletin board
highlights students' achievements. Overall, the board is designed to enhance the
teaching and learning experience.

 What makes it attractive to the learners?

The bulletin board is well-organized and creatively designed, with content that
remains easily readable from a distance. Its presentation effectively captures
attention while ensuring clarity.

 Does it help in the learning process? Yes How?

The Bulletin Board Display plays a vital role in keeping students informed
about ongoing activities, which helps enhance their engagement in school. It
also serves as a tool for them to track their academic progress by showcasing

their achievements. Moreover, the board allows students to revisit previous
lessons and explore new topics introduced by their teachers. This ongoing
access to information fosters a continuous learning environment that benefits
everyone.

Learning Environment 2:
 If the teacher is using a distance delivery of learning through the modules,
where is most likely the learning space of the students?

Typically, students engage in distance learning from their homes. This

environment serves as their primary learning space during remote education. As
a result, their home setting significantly impacts their learning experience.

 Can you describe?

A study area where students can complete their school assignments is essential.
This space should be calm and devoid of distractions. Such an environment
allows for better focus and productivity while studying.

 How can you help as a teacher to make such environment conducive for
learning?

I will ensure that students have sufficient time to complete their tasks along
with access to necessary learning materials. Additionally, my focus as their
teacher will be to motivate and encourage them to be productive. Supporting
their efforts will be a top priority in my approach to teaching.

Analyze
The examples above, describe two contrasting situations. The first shows that the
learners are in the same room or space while in the second, the learners maybe in
different learning spaces like homes, study hubs or in extreme cases parks or under the
trees.
As a teacher, in which of the two situations would you prefer to manage for
learning? Choose between Learning environment 1 or Learning Environment 2.
Explain your choice: Why?
As a teacher, I prefer to manage Learning Environment 1, where students learn
together in the same space. Face-to-face classes is more beneficial than distance learning.
In a physical classroom, the direct interaction fosters a more personal connection,
allowing teachers to give immediate feedback and better understand how engaged their

students are. It also creates opportunities for students to interact with one another, making
group work and discussions becomes much easier. The collaborative atmosphere in a
classroom not only enhances learning but also builds a sense of community among
students. Overall, I believe this environment supports a richer educational experience for
everyone involved.

Reflect
Based on my noticing and analysis, I realized that
a.Teachers need to create a supportive learning environment to effectively meet the needs
of their students. Establishing this atmosphere is essential for fostering student
engagement and success.
b. Learning environment significantly influences how effectively education is
delivered and received.
c. A conducive learning environment contributes to the learning progress of students.

Write Action Research Prompts

OBSERVE
What probable problem may result from the two situations of the learning
environment?
 In Learning Environment 1, various challenges can occur including distractions,
ineffective communication, resource limitations, attendance issues, and classroom
management difficulties.
 In Learning Environment 2, teachers cannot ensure the originality of student’s work.
REFLECT
What solutions can I think of to solve the problem?
 To address problems in physical classroom, doing action research will be beneficial.
We can also conduct meeting with parents for them to know the situation of their child.
This approach will help us collaboratively find solutions.
 Teachers should require opening of students camera in the whole teaching – learning
period.
PLAN
How should I do it?
 Teachers and Parents should work together in tracking student’s learning progress.
Parent’s involvement is beneficial as it keeps them informed about their children's
academic performance. Encouraging this engagement can significantly enhance the
support students receive at home.

Work on my Artifacts
In not less than 300 words, write an essay on the topic: “My Conducive Learning
Environment”
MY CONDUCIVE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT
The effectiveness of education is influenced not only by teachers’ performance
but also by the overall coordination of the school environment specifically in the
classroom. For learning to be impactful, the educational setting must be supportive,
providing students with the necessary space and time to engage actively in the teaching
and learning process. It must also create a stimulating learning environments which
involves thoughtful classroom organization, interactive displays throughout the school,
and fostering a culture of innovation. This may include arranging the physical space,
encouraging student cooperation, and cultivating a positive classroom climate, all of
which enhance students' focus and engagement.
A conducive learning environment is essential, featuring opportunities for small
group work and flexible spaces which is open for all. Collaborating in small groups helps
to bridge gaps in students' knowledge and encourages them to engage with diverse
perspectives, enhancing their understanding of the subject matter. A learning
environment should be inclusive, with shared learning areas accessible to all students,
regardless of their backgrounds. Additionally, having readily available audio-visual
resources is crucial, as these tools significantly improve lesson delivery and aid in the
retention of concepts, fostering students' critical and analytical thinking skills.
Maintaining cleanliness and safety in the learning environment is also vital for
promoting health and safe classroom environment supporting academic success. It also
allows students to focus on their learning without unnecessary distractions. Moreover, a
learning environment must have proper lighting and ventilation which contributes to
students' comfort, motivation, and overall achievement in class. Furthermore, the
psychological atmosphere of the school should be welcoming and supportive, fostering a
sense of community and well-being among students. By prioritizing these aspects of the
school environment, we as teachers and future teachers can significantly enhance
student’s academic performance, personal development, and overall growth.
