A polynomial function is a function of the form

P(x) = anxn + an-1xn-1 + an-2xn-2 + … + a1x + a0, an  0 where n is a positive integer an, an-1, an-2, …, ao
are real numbers called coefficients, anxn is the leading term, an is the leading coefficient, and a0 is the
constant term.
The degree of a polynomial function is determined by the highest power of its terms.

If (x – r)m is a factor of a polynomial function f, and (x – r)m + 1

is not a factor of f, then r is a zero of
multiplicity m of f.

If r is a zero of odd multiplicity, the sign of polynomial function f ( x) changes from one side of r to
the other side, and the graph of f ( x) crosses the x axis at r.

If r is a zero of even multiplicity, the sign of polynomial function f ( x) remains the same from one side
of r to the other side, and the graph of f ( x) is tangent to the x axis at r.
