Design of Aqueduct Structures

The document outlines the design process for an aqueduct structure, including calculations for the slab and beam dimensions, loads, and reinforcement requirements. It specifies the dimensions and material properties, such as yield stress and concrete strength, and provides detailed calculations for dead and live loads, maximum bending moments, and required areas of steel reinforcement. The final design includes specific dimensions for the slab and beam, along with the number and spacing of steel bars needed for structural integrity.

Design of Aqueduct structures

Example:
Design 1.5m wide and 1m deep aqueduct. The aqueduct is
expected to carry water with a maximum depth of flow or High
of water = 0.7m, wide of aqueduct = 1.5m, span of aqueduct =
10m, yield stress of steel or fy = 420Mpa and concrete
compression strength f 'c= 20Mpa. Column dimensions (500 x
500) mm.

I- Design of Slab:
Length of Aqueduct slab on long direction LL= 10m, hence LnL =
LL – 500 = 10 – 0.50 = 9.50 m
Length of Aqueduct slab on short direction L s= 1.50 + 0.30 +
0.30 = 2.10m, hence Lns = Ls–0.60 = 2.10 – 0.60 = 1.50 m
LnL 9.50
Lns
= 1.50
= 6.333 > 2.0; hence one-way slab shall be
calculated.

150 mm Accepted.
Weigh of self-slab = 0.15 x 24 = 3.6 KN/m2.
Live load of 0.7m depth water = 0.7 x 10 = 7.0 KN/m 2.
Ultimate or factored load Wu = 1.2 x 3.6 + 1.6 x 7.0 = 15.52
KN/m2.
Load on per linear meter design strip Wu = 15.52 KN/m 2 x 1.0m
= 15.52 KN/m.

According to the ACI Code if using fy = 420 MPa than ρmin =

Asmin = ρbh = 0.0018 x 1,000 x 150 = 270 mm2/m; Hence Asmin
