Question: Discuss the library catalogue, types and

classification of each type.
Answer:
Library catalogue: Is a comprehensive and organized list
of all sources held in library. Resources include books,
journals, audiovisual materials and other media.
Therefore, library catalogue provides information about
each item including title, date, author, date of
publication and its location within the library. The
library catalogue tells you if an item is available or
checked out.
TYPES OF LIBRARY CATALOGUE.
• Card catalogue: It is an index system used in libraries
at which it help users to locate books and other
resources in library. It contains information about the
book and the information is written on cards.
• Book catalogue: Is a comprehensive list of all books
held in library and it also provides essential
information about each book making easier for user
to find and access them in libraries. It contains
author’s name, title of the book, publication date,
publisher, edition, book number, call number and
subject headings.
• OPAC (Online Public Access Catalogue): In this type,
information about the books are stored in computers
as databases at which it allows users to search for and
access the holdings of library or libraries. It is easy to
use and it also saves time.
Classification of books in library.
Refers to the system used to organize the library
collections, making it easier for users to find books on
specific subjects. The collections are arranged on library
shelves through number allocation called call number.
NB:
Call number: Is a unique address for finding, organizing
and locating an item in a library. It is a combination of one
or two letters and a number which help library users to
access library holdings.
• It includes author/title information
• Classification system
• Publication date
Call number can be found on book spines and library
catalogue.
Example of call number is GV 989 A.52
Therefore, library classification organizes library material
and hence makes easier and quick finding of materials in
library.
Common systems used in library classification.
• Library of congress classification (LC)
This refers to a library classification system which is
divided into 21 letters to describe materials found in
the library
And its mostly used in higher education levels like
universities and colleges
It uses all alphabets for classification except I,O,X,Y,W
Example A- anthropology
B-biology
C-chemistry
D-driving
Above are the examples how LC system can be used
to classify books
NB; first letter for main branch of subject, second
letter for subdivision of main branch
Dewey decimal classification
This is a type of library classification mainly used by
children and young readers i.e primary schools and
public libraries .
This system uses number system to group materials or
books according to their subjects
EXAMPLE

NUMBER CLASS/ SUBJECT

10 Mathematics
20 ICT
30 Social studies
40 English
That’s to say all books concerning
Mathematics can be found on shelf labelled number ‘10’
English can be found on shelf labelled number ‘40’

Therefore the users can access books based on the

number given per book subject as the example above
shows clearly
