Client-server networks

The document discusses client-server and peer-to-peer networks, highlighting their advantages and disadvantages. Client-server networks centralize data and security but can be expensive and slow, while peer-to-peer networks are less costly and allow for shared resources but lack central control. It also mentions file sharing websites and cloud computing, noting their benefits of accessibility and storage, alongside concerns about security and data ownership.

Client server networks.

Clients are the computers that log on to use a network.

The server is a computer which provides services needed from the clients.

Advantages
Data and applications are held locally. This means that all data can be
backed up centrally, so it isn’t spread between multiple computers.
Anti-virus software only needs to be installed on the main server
computer.
Security is better because all the data is stored only on one computer.
Users can lo gin from any computer on the network.
Disadvantages
Expensive to install. If main server shuts down the whole system gets shut
down. Server can be slow if too many people use it.
Peer to Peer networks.
No central server, every computer holds its own data. Used in offices and
homes.
Advantages
A printer or scanner can be shared on the server. Every user can access
data from the other computers on the networks. A single router can
provide internet access for the whole server. Less expensive than a client-
server network.
File sharing websites
File sharing websites use peer-to-peer networking over a Wide Area
Network. This can cause people to illegally share illegal things.
Cloud computing
Software applications and data are held on the network of computers
called the Cloud. Usually accessed on a web browser. Can be used to store
data, photos and music.
Advantages
You can access files from anywhere. Don’t need a powerful computer.
Don’t need to manually back up data.
Disadvantages
Idea of handing important data can to companies can be imposing. Can be
vulnerable to hacking. Have to pay to a store more data than a free
allowance.
