Climate Change

Climate change is causing interconnected societal and environmental issues, including extreme weather, health risks, and threats to vulnerable populations. While human activities are the primary cause, experts believe that urgent actions like reducing emissions and investing in technology can mitigate its effects. Global cooperation and individual efforts are essential to limit temperature rise and adapt to the changing climate.

Climate Change Impacts

Climate change affects many parts of our society, creating problems that connect to each other.
For example, droughts can hurt food production and health, while floods can spread illnesses,
damage the environment, and displace home. Vulnerable groups, especially those with fewer
resources, are more at risk due to existing inequalities.

However, experts believe that the worst outcomes of climate change can still be prevented. We
know some solutions, and if we reduce emissions and invest in new technology, we can lessen
harmful effects, improve public health, and create new jobs. Greenhouse gas levels, such as
carbon dioxide and methane, continue to increase, which emphasizes the urgency of
addressing these issues.

Data from NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) indicates concerning
trends: global temperatures are rising, glaciers are melting, and severe weather events are
becoming more common. Water resources are also affected, with more flooding and droughts
posing challenges for agriculture. Climate change can lead to health problems too, as rising
temperatures and natural disasters can impact people's well-being, especially for those who are
already vulnerable.

Ecosystems are under stress due to climate change, especially in the Arctic, where warming is
happening quickly. Some species may adapt to these changes, but many others cannot keep
up, leading to changes in biodiversity. Coastal areas and their infrastructure face greater risks
from rising sea levels, pushing communities to plan for a more resilient future.

In summary, climate change presents interconnected challenges that need immediate action to
protect vulnerable groups and ensure society can adapt and thrive. Education and community
involvement in climate issues are essential for building understanding and encouraging positive
actions.

What is Climate Change? A really simple guide.

Human activities are making the Earth hotter, leading to problems like stronger heatwaves and
rising sea levels. Things will likely get worse, but scientists say we can take urgent steps to
reduce the worst effects of climate change.

What is Climate Change?

Climate change means long-term changes in the Earth’s average temperatures and weather. In
the last decade, the world has warmed about 2.2°F since the late 1800s. Recently, temperatures
went above 2.7°F for the first time, after 2023 became the hottest year ever.
**How Are Humans Causing Climate Change?**
While the climate naturally changes, the fast warming we've seen in the last century is mostly
due to human actions, especially burning fossil fuels like coal, oil, and gas. This adds
greenhouse gasses, mainly carbon dioxide, into the air, trapping heat and causing the planet to
warm. Since the Industrial Revolution, CO2 levels have increased by about 50%.

What Are the Effects of Climate Change So Far?

The rise in global temperatures has led to serious environmental changes, such as more
extreme weather, faster melting ice, and warmer oceans. These changes affect people's lives
too, like severe droughts in East Africa putting millions at risk of hunger and heatwaves in
Europe leading to more deaths.

Why Does Limiting Temperature Rise Matter?

Keeping the temperature rise below 2.7°F is very important to avoid serious problems. If the
temperature goes above this limit, we could face much worse weather, higher sea levels, and a
huge loss of coral reefs. Poorer countries, which contribute less to emissions, will be hit the
hardest because they can’t adapt easily.

What Are Governments Doing?

In 2015, almost 200 countries agreed to try to keep warming to 2.7°F and to reach "net zero"
CO2 emissions by 2050. However, emissions are still rising and current plans suggest we may
exceed 2.7°F. Some progress has been made, like using more renewable energy, but much
more needs to be done.

What Can Individuals Do?

While big changes need to come from governments and businesses, individuals can help by:
- Flying less
- Using less energy
- Making homes more energy-efficient
- Choosing electric cars or living without a car
- Switching from gas heating to electric systems
- Eating less red meat

By working together, we can all help fight climate change and protect our planet!
