Mme 1 (C, D)

The document outlines two experiments conducted at the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology focused on identifying polymers using chemical methods and measuring their gross density. The first experiment successfully identified six polymer samples, including PETE and HDPE, through various tests, while the second experiment calculated the density of PETE with a slight error margin. The results indicate adherence to experimental protocols and highlight the importance of precision in measurements.

Experiment name: QUANTITATIVE GROSS DENSITY MEASUREMENTS OF

POLYMERS

Quantitative Gross Density Measurements: For Sample – 01

Weight of Pycnometer, 𝑊𝑝 = 28.82 𝑔

Weight of pycnometer + Sample, 𝑊𝑝 + 𝑊𝑠 = 34.3 𝑔
Weight of pycnometer + Sample + Water, 𝑊𝑝 + 𝑊𝑠 + 𝑊𝑝𝑤 = 80.5 𝑔
Weight of pycnometer + Water, 𝑊𝑝 + 𝑊𝑓𝑤 = 78.8 𝑔

Weight of the reference liquid,

𝑊𝑝𝑤 = (𝑊𝑝 + 𝑊𝑠 + 𝑊𝑝𝑤) − (𝑊𝑝 + 𝑊𝑠) = 80.5 − 34.3𝑔 = 46.2 𝑔
Weight of solid sample, 𝑊𝑠 = 𝑊𝑝 + 𝑊𝑠 − 𝑊𝑝 = (34.3− 28.82) 𝑔 = 5.48 𝑔
Total weight of liquid (full), 𝑊𝑓𝑤 = (𝑊𝑝 + 𝑊𝑓𝑤) − 𝑊𝑝 = (78.8 − 28.82) 𝑔 = 49.98 𝑔

Volume of pycnometer, 𝑉𝑝 = 50 𝑚𝑙

49.98
Density of liquid, 𝜌 = 𝑊𝑓𝑤/ 𝑉𝑝 = = 0.9996 𝑔/𝑚𝑙
50
46.2
Volume of liquid used to immerse the solid sample, 𝑉𝑝𝑤 = 𝑊𝑝𝑤/ 𝜌 = 0.9996= 46.218𝑚𝑙

Volume of solid sample, 𝑉𝑠 = 𝑉𝑝 - 𝑉𝑝𝑤 = (50 − 46.218) = 3.782𝑚𝑙

5.48
Density of solid = 𝜌s = 𝑊𝑠/ 𝑉𝑠 = 3.782 𝑔/𝑚𝑙 = 1.44896 𝑔/𝑚𝑙

Result: The materials have been identified successfully as PETE (Polyethylene Terephthalate).

Error analysis:
Density of the solid sample, ⍴s = 1.44896 g/mL
Highest possible density of PETE, ⍴ = 1.39 g/mL
Error = (⍴s – ⍴) / ⍴ = (1.44896 – 1.39) / 1.39 = 4.24%

Discussion: During the flame test, careful attention was given to every step, ensuring strict
adherence to the experimental instructions. We were able to determine that out polymer sample
was PETE (Polyethylene Terephthalate). The lab sheet guidelines were meticulously followed,
and density calculations were executed with precision to minimize potential errors. However,
a slight error may have occurred during the weighing process and while filling the pycnometer.
