Telecommunication Networks
BSAET 3-3 - 20th century
AVT 3123 – Communication System Analysis - invention of transistor in 1940’s

COMMUNICATION 7. Satellite Communication

- process of passing information from one to another - Launch of first artificial satellite, Sputnik 1,
- sending, receiving, and processing of information by the Soviet Union in 1957
by electronic means - satellites in geostationary and low Earth orbits
have become integral
 Communications started with wire telegraphy in
1840’s, developing with telephony and radio. 8. Digital Revolution
 Radio communication made possible by the invention - transition from analog to digital
of triode tube. communication technologies in 20th century
- advent of the internet and the World Wide
Web in 1990s

9. Mobile Communication
- invention of mobile phones in late 20th
century revolutionized personal
communication
- mobile networks including 2G, 3G, 4G, 5G
have continued to evolve

 Semaphore Towers – could transmit coded messages

COMMUNICATION SYSTEM ANALYSIS visually over long distances in France

1. Source Encoder - converts message into message  The first telegraph line in the US connected
signals (bits) Washington,D.C. to Baltimore in 1844
2. Transmitter – converts message signal into format
appropriate for channel transmission Importance of Communication in Daily Life
(analog/digital) - helps people to express their ideas and feelings
3. Channel – conveys signal but may introduce
attenuation, distortion, noise, or interference Importance of Communication in an Organization
4. Receiver – decodes received signal back to - promotes motivation
message signal - source of information
5. Source Decoder – decodes message signal back to - alters individual’s attitudes
original message - helps in socializing

HISTORY OF COMMUNICATION Importance of Communication in Aviation Industry

1. Ancient Signaling - As the major means of communication between
- smoke signals, drumbeats, and semaphore pilots and ATC is through radio
systems communication, verbal communication skills is
crucial for aviation safety.
2. Optical Telegraph
- developed by Claude Chappe in 18th century Importance of Communication in an Organization
- network of semaphore towers with movable - base for action
arms - planning becomes easy
- means of coordination
3. Telegraph - aids in decision-making
- invented by Samuel Morse in 19th century - provides effective leadership
- Morse code allowed messages to be transmitted - boosts morale and motivation
electronically over wires. - means of coordination

4. Telephone Invention Types of Communication Systems

- invented by Alexander Graham Bell in 1876 1. Analog
- enables voice transmission over long distances 2. Digital

5. Radio Communication
- Guglielmo Marconi’s work in the late 19th
century led to the development of wireless
telegraphy
- Marconi’s radio transmission in 1961
demonstrated the potential for wireless
communication
Limitations of Communication System
1. Noise Limitation - unwanted form of energy which
interferes

2. Bandwidth Limitation - frequency range needed for a

particular transmission in called bandwidth or channel

3. Equipment Limitation - theoretical limit may not be

realized in a practical system due to equipment
limitations

Noise – undesirable or unwanted signals

External Noise – unwanted interference outside the

communication system

Types of External Noise

1. Atmospheric Noise
- “static” by natural atmospheric process

2. Man-made Noise
- from electrical equipment, machinery, vehicles,
and other human activities

3. Cosmic Noise
- space noise from extraterrestrial sources

4. Industrial Noise
- noise generated by industrial processes

Internal Noise – unwanted electrical signals within

communication system

Types of Internal Noise

1. Thermal Noise (Johnson-Nyquist Noise)
- background “hiss” due to heat

2. Shot Noise
- electrons move in tiny packet (random)

3. Flicker Noise
- pink noise or 1/f noise
- occurs in almost all electronic devices

4. Burst Noise
- popcorn noise

 Noise is unavoidable phenomenon but it can be lessen.
