What is TriMet? Tri Met stands for Tri-County Metropolitan Transportation District of Oregon.1 TriMet is a municipal corporation of the State of Oregon. It is a public body. It has broad powers to provide mass transportation on behalf of the district. It can issue and sell general obligation and revenue bonds, levy an employer payroll tax and levy a tax measured by net earnings from self-employment.2 When did TriMet Start? TriMet began operation on December 1, 1969.34 What Legislature Created TriMet? The Oregon Legislature passed House Bill 1808 allowing the creation of transit districts and providing them with the power to raise revenue through a payroll tax.5 How is TriMet Controlled? TriMet is governed by a seven-member board of directors.6 They are appointed by the governor and must live within certain geographical districts.
