Our topic to discuss for today is about
Table Tennis. First, let us know the
definition Table Tennis.

What is table tennis?

Table Tennis is a sport in which two or
four players hit a lightweight ball back
and forth across a table using a small
bat.
- It may be played with one player at
each end of the table or with two players
at each end who may be both men or
both women or one of each.
- The table tennis is also called as “Ping
pong”

OBJECTIVES OF TABLE TENNIS:

To hit the ball over and across the net on
the opponent’s side of the table so that
the opponent can’t return the ball and
score a point.

HISTORY OF TABLE TENNIS

The game was invented in England in
the early days of the 20th century and
was originally called Ping-Pong, a trade
name.
The name table tennis was adopted in
1921–22 when the old Ping-Pong
Association formed in 1902 was revived.
In 1880’s some sources claimed that the
sport was once known as indoor tennis,
and was played in the early 1880’s by
British Army officers stationed in India
and South Africa.

EQUIPMENTS IN TABLE TENNIS
1. BALL

The ball has to have a spherical shape

with a diameter of 40mm and should
weight 2.7 gm. The ball should be made
of similar plastic material or celluloid and
shall be white and matte.
2. PADDLE / RACKET

Racket or the paddle can have any

shape, size, or even weight, but the
blade has to be rigid and flat. It is said
that a minimum of 85% of the blade shall
have natural wood in thickness.
The paddle has two dominant colors;
Red is the one rubber for speed and
power.
Black is for the control and spin.
3. NET

The net is the one that divides the

opponent and the player’s side. It is 6
feet (1.8 meters) long, and its upper
edge along the whole length is 6 inches
(15.25 cm) above the playing surface.
4. TABLE

– The table should have a rectangular

surface with 5 ft in width, and 9 ft in
length.
The table is 2 and half ft above the
ground.
The table also has Division Line.

RULES AND REGULATION OF TABLE

TENNIS

1. The toss of the coin determines the

player serves first.
This match is just about to begin. The
umpire presents a coin, and following
the results of the coin toss, the player
who guessed correctly is handed the
ball. He is allowed to choose between
serving and choosing one of the two
ends of the table to position himself.

2. Games are played to 11 points

Every player gets to serve twice in a
row. The first to 11 points is declared the
winner. If the points are tied at 10-10, a
player then has to strive for a two-point
lead to win the game.

3. Alternate serves every two points

Each side of the table alternates serving
two points at a time.
4. Toss the ball straight up when
serving
To serve the ball in ping pong. Hold the
ball in your open palm, behind your end
of the table. Toss at least 6” straight up,
and strike it on the way down. It must hit
your side of the table and then the other
side.
5. THE SERVE CAN LAND
ANYWHERE IN SINGLES
There is no restriction on where the ball
lands on your side or your opponent’s
side of the table. It can bounce two or
more times on your opponent’s side (if
so, that’s your point), bounce over the
side, or even hit the edge.
6. A SERVE THAT TOUCHES THE NET
ON THE WAY OVER IS A “LET”
Can the ball hit the net in ping pong?
Yes, during a RALLY, if it touches the top
of the net and then otherwise lands as a
legitimate hit. BUT not when serving. If a
served ball hits the net on the way over
and otherwise legally bounces in play,
it’s a “let” serve.

BASIC STROKES IN TABLE TENNIS

1. DRIVE
 Forehand Drive
The forehand drive is one of the most
commonly used strokes in table tennis,
and it involves using your dominant
hand to hit the ball forcefully and with
speed.
 Backhand Drive
Similar to the forehand drive, the
backhand drive is executed with the
non-dominant hand. It requires precise
timing and coordination to generate
power and control.
2. PUSH
 Forehand Push
The forehand push is a stroke that is
used when you need to return the ball
with precision and control, often
executed when the opponent’s shot is
low and requires a gentle touch.
 Backhand Push
The backhand push is similar to the
forehand push, but it is executed with
the non-dominant hand. It requires
finesse and accuracy to counteract your
opponent’s spin and placement
effectively.

3. LOOP
 Forehand Loop
The forehand loop is a highly dynamic
and aggressive stroke that allows you to
generate significant topspin on the ball.
 Backhand Loop
The backhand loop is similar to the
forehand loop, but it is executed with the
non-dominant hand. It requires excellent
timing, coordination, and wrist flexibility
to generate topspin effectively.
