Module 04, Tutorial 4.2
Module 04, Tutorial 4.2
Tutorials aim to discuss matters arising from lectures, work not covered in lectures, essays
or other tasks that have been set or some aspect of the readings. Tutorials are generally led
by a tutor. As such, the following work is to be discussed and explored either physically or
via online means.
Tutorial (2 Hours)
Video 01
01) What are network topologies?
A topology is a layout of how a network communicates with different devices
02) What are the basic categories of network topologies?
Star topology
Bus topology
Ring topology
Mesh topology
03) Explain the characteristics of star topology.
Every node is connected to a central node called a hub or switch
Centralized Management
All traffic must pass through the hub or switch
04) Explain the characteristics of ring topology.
A ring topology is a bus topology in a closed loop
Peer-to –Peer LAN topology
Two connections: one to each of its nearest neighbors
Unidirectional
Sending and receiving data takes place with the help of a Token
Page 1
05) Explain the characteristics of bus topology.
All data transmitted between nodes in the network is transmitted over this common
transmission medium and is cable to be received by all nodes in the network
simultaneously.
A Signal containing the address of the intended receiving machine travels from a source
machine in both directions to all machines connected to the bus until it finds the
intended recipient.
06) What do we mean by BNC Connector.
In the bus topology the computers connect to the coaxial cable using special connectors
called BNC, Which are also known as T connectors
07) Explain the characteristics of mesh topology.
Each node ids directly connected to every other nodes in the network.
Fault tolerant and reliable
08) Explain the characteristics of Ad hoc and infrastructure topologies.
Ad hoc
Simple technology
Doesn’t rely on centralized device
Connected to other devices wirelessly by peer to peer connection
Easy to set up
Infrastructure
Uses wire and wireless devices
Similar to star topology
Wireless access point helps wireless devices like phone and laptop connect to the
network
Video 02
01) List down the characteristics of RJ-45 connectors.
The most common network connector that is used in networking.
8 pin modular connector.
Used to connect computers and network devices in local area network.
Used with unshielded twisted pair cables.
Page 2
02) What is the difference between RJ-45 connectors and extended RJ-48 connectors.
RJ-45 used with unshielded twisted pair cables and RJ-48 used with shielded twisted
pair cables.
RJ-48 is primarily used with T1 lines and it’s also wired differently than the RJ-45.
