Module 04, Tutorial 4.1
Module 04, Tutorial 4.1
Tutorials aim to discuss matters arising from lectures, work not covered in lectures, essays
or other tasks that have been set or some aspect of the readings. Tutorials are generally led
by a tutor. As such, the following work is to be discussed and explored either physically or
via online means.
Tutorial (2 Hours)
Video 01
01)
a) Why do we need networks?
Communication
Share Information
b) Explain the three types of network types.
LAN(Local Area Network)
o LAN is a computer network that covers a small area.
o LAN connects computers and workstations in office or home.
o LAN covers a local area 1KM.
o Data transmission rate is 10/100 Mbps.
o Uses IEEE 802 standard
CAN(Campus Area Network)
o Campus Area Network (CAN) is a computer network. It is made of two or more LANs
within a limited area
o CAN can cover many building in an area
o Can is usually used in hospital, laboratories, library, school and collages
o CAN covers an area of 5 to 10KM
MAN(Metropolitan Area Network)
o MAN is an interconnection of network in a city
Page 1
o MAN supports data and voice transmission.
o The best example for MAN is the television cable network in cities.
o MAN covers an area of 2 to 200KM
o MAN uses IEEE 802 standard
Video 02
02)
a) Explain the main difference between categories of network topologies.
Physical topology describes the layout of devices and cables
Logical topology describes the way in which data is transmitted within the network
b) What is the difference between star topology and extended star topology?
In a standard star topology, all nodes are connected to a central device called a hub or a switch
An extended star topology is a variation where multiple star topologies are interconnected using
a backbone network
c) What is the main role of token in ring topology?
Sending and receiving data takes place with the help of a token
d) State a closed loop topology.
Ring Topology
e) Explain the advantages and disadvantages of mesh topology.
Page 2
Advantages:
o Fault tolerant
o Reliable
Disadvantages
o Issues with broadcasting messages
o Expensive and impractical for large networks.
