1. Define a Venn diagram;
3. Solve word problems involving sets with the use of Venn diagrams.

5. At an overpriced department store, there are 120 customers. If 55 have purchased shirts,
48 have purchased pants, and 45 have purchased neither, how many purchased both shirts

From the previous module, you have learned that a set is a well-defined group of objects, called
elements, which share a common characteristic. The different set operations are:
1. Union of Sets: The union of the sets A and B, denoted by A∪B, is the set that
contains those elements that belong to A, B, or to both.
2. Intersection of Sets: The intersection of the sets A and B, denoted by A∩B, is the
set containing those elements that belong to both A and B.
3. Complement of a Set: The complement of a set A, written as A’, is the set of all
elements found in the universal set, U, that are not found in set A.
4. Difference of Sets: The difference of two sets, written as A – B, is the set of all
elements of A that are not elements of B.

A Venn diagram consists of two or more overlapping closed curves, usually circles, each
representing a set.
Now, you are going to practice analyzing sets in a Venn diagram through the following examples.
1. Given the Venn diagram below, find the elements of the following:

Answer: P = {3, 6, 9}. The elements that you can find in P are 3, 6, and 9.
b. Q
Answer: Q = {2, 4, 6, 8}. The elements that you can find in Q are 2, 4, 6, and 8.
2. Find the elements of the following sets illustrated in the Venn diagram below.

Answer: A = {1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11}

Explanation: There are 38 people who chose both winter melon and salty cream so this will
be the intersection of the two sets. Write 38 at the middle of the Venn diagram. Now you must find
out how many people chose winter melon only and salty cream only.
total number of people who chose winter melon only=80 -38 =42
total number of people who chose salty cream only = 52 – 38 = 14

Solve the following problems using Venn Diagram.
1. Out of fifty students, 34 joined the Journalism Class and 25 joined the Robotics Club.
a) If 16 students joined both clubs, how many students are in neither club?
b) How many are in either club?
2. In a school, all the students play either basketball or badminton or both. There are 200
students who play basketball, 150 students play badminton and 80 students play both
games. Find:
a) the number of students who play basketball only.
b) the number of students who play badminton only.
c) the total number of students in the school.
Remember
2. In a class of 60 students, each of the student passed either in English or in Math or in both
subjects. There are12 students who passed in both subjects and 35 passed in Math. Find how
many students passed in English.
3. In a class, there are 30 students who like chocolate, 25 students who like vanilla, and 12
students who like neither. If there are 55 people in the class, how many students like chocolate
and vanilla?
