Course description:
This course provides the students with an introduction to the core concepts in data and information
management. It is centered around the core skills of: (1) identifying organizational information
requirements; (2) modeling them using conceptual data modeling techniques; (3) converting the
conceptual data models into relational data models and verifying its structural characteristics with
normalization techniques; (4) implementing and utilizing a relational database using an industrial-strength
database management system.

Course Aim
Provide the students with systematic approaches to the design, implement and manage databases

Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course unit, a student should be able to:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of the role of databases and database management systems in
managing organizational data and information in the context of enterprise systems.
2. Describe the main stages of the database development life cycle (DSDLC)
3. Capture and analyze the information requirements for an enterprise domain using at least one
conceptual data modeling technique (such as entity-relationship modeling).
4. Design high-quality, normalized relational databases
5. Implement database using a relational database management System.

Course Content
1. Database approach
2. The database environment
3. Database Development Life Cycle (DSDLC)
4. Conceptual data model (Entity-Relationship Model; Enhanced Entity-Relationship Modell)
5. Logical Database Design (Mapping conceptual schema to a relational schema; Normalization)
6. Physical database Design (Physical data model; Indexing; Datatypes)
7. Database development (Database Languages: SQL)
