no MEASUREMENT OF CONNECTOR, BENDING

Date: AND FIBER ATTENUATION LOSSES

AIM:
To measure the connector losses bending and fiber attenuation losses by using fiber
alignment unit.

APPARATUS REQUIRED:

s.no Name of Equipment’s Qty

1 Optic Fiber Trainer Kit 1
2 Two channel 20 MHz Oscilloscope 1
3 1mm diameter of plastic optical fiber 1 meter 1
4 1mm diameter of plastic optical fiber 3 meter 1
5 Patch cords Required
THEORY:
The power emitted by a source needs to be launched into the optical fiber waveguide
so that the modulated light generated by the transmitter can be transported through the
fiber and delivered at the receiver end. Transmission of light over thousands of kilometer
through optical fibers is possible only with the help of intermediate repeaters. Between
successive repeaters, we need to connect a numbers of sections of fiber cables as well as
a number of other optical components in between. The number of such joints or
connectors depends on the distance between successive repeaters or the distance
between the transmitter and the receiver in a repeater less optical link. Even though
technologically it is possible.

PROCEDURE:

1. Give the connections as per the block diagram.

2. Establish the analog link between the laser source and fiber coupling.

3. Connect a non coupled multimode fiber and measure the output voltage.

4. Then connect a coupled multimode fiber and measure the output voltage.

5. Tabulate the reading and find the coupling loss by the efficiency.
