Course Outline: UML 414 Research Paper

Pre-requisites: UML 112 Legal Research Methods and Writing

Purpose:
To expose students to the practical implementation of research methodology.

Expected Learning Outcomes:


By the end of the course unit, students should be able to:

1. Write a research proposal on a chosen topic approved by the School.


2. Defend the research proposal in the School.
3. Defend their method of writing a thesis.
4. Collect data and write a research thesis under a designated supervisor.

Course Content:

1. Introduction to the Research Paper


o Overview of research methodologies.
o Importance of selecting a research topic relevant to society and the student’s field
of specialization.
2. Research Proposal Development
o Identifying a research problem.
o Developing clear and specific objectives for the study.
o Structuring a research proposal.
o Submission and approval process within the School.
3. Proposal Defense
o Preparing for a defense presentation.
o Responding to feedback and critiques.
4. Research Thesis Writing
o Implementing research methods.
o Collecting and analyzing data.
o Writing the thesis with clarity and coherence.
o Structuring the thesis:
 Cover page arrangement.
 Abstract.
 Introduction.
Literature Review.

Methodology.

Findings and Discussion.

Conclusions and Recommendations.

References.

5. Formatting and Presentation
o Following institutional guidelines for thesis formatting.
o Ensuring adherence to academic writing standards.
o Avoiding meaningless arguments and supporting views with evidence.
6. Submission and Examination
o Binding and submission of three copies to the University.
o Internal grading by a departmental member (other than the supervisor).
o External examination process.
