Assignment 1 and 2

The document outlines an assignment consisting of ten questions related to the concepts of spatial and temporal coherence, conditions for dark and bright fringes in various thin film scenarios, and calculations involving interference patterns. It includes specific problems involving thin films, wedge-shaped films, and the Michelson Interferometer, as well as practical applications like antireflection coatings. The assignment requires a combination of theoretical explanations and mathematical derivations to solve the given problems.

Assignment 2

1. Explain Spatial Coherence and Temporal Coherence

2. Obtain conditions for dark and bright fringes due to interference of reflected light in
parallel thin film.
3. Obtain conditions for dark and bright fringes due to interference of transmitted light in
parallel thin film.
4. Obtain the condition for bright and dark fringes due to interference in wedge shaped film.
Derive an expression for fringe width.
5. Two plane glass plates 10 cm long each, touching at one end and separated by a strip of
paper 0.01cm thick. When the plates are illuminated by monochromatic light the average
distance between consecutive dark rings is 0.02 cm. Calculate wavelength of light

6. A thin film of water (μ = 1.33) is floating on glycerin. Find the minimum thickness of
water that will produce constructive interference for reflected Green (λ=544 nm) light.
7. Explain with suitable diagram conditions for dark and bright fringes in Michelson
Interferometer. Why are circular fringes formed in it?
8. What is antireflection coating? Describe amplitude condition and Phase condition for
antireflection coating.
9. White light is incident on a film at an angle of 53 and reflected light is
observed by spectrometer. It is found that two consecutive dark bands
correspond to wavelength 6 × 10-5 cm and 5.86 × 10-5 cm overlaps if refractive
index of film 1.45. Calculate thickness of film.
10. A thin wedge of air is formed between a sheet of glass 5 cm long and a
horizontal glass plate. One end of the sheet of glass is in contact with a glass
plate. The other end is supported by a thin metal film 0.05 mm thick. The
horizontal plate is illuminated from above with light of 589 nm. How many
dark interference fringes are observed per cm in the reflected light?
