Lesson 2. Global Interdependence
Lesson 3: Global Citizenship in Action

III. LESSON OVERVIEW

Global citizenship is a concept that revolves around individuals

recognition of their connectedness with the world and their responsibility
to create a better future for everyone. UNESCO defines global citizenship
as a set of principles that include human rights, social justice,
intercultural understanding, and environmental sustainability. A global
citizen must be aware of the issues that affect the world and work
towards creating positive change on a global scale.

In order to effectively communicate with people from various

backgrounds and to foster respect for different cultures, intercultural
knowledge is an essential component of global citizenship. A more
tolerant and inclusive society results from this. According to Oxfam,
growing empathy and bridging cultural gaps depend on intercultural
knowledge.

Sustainable development is another key element of global

citizenship. This involves taking steps to protect the environment,
promoting sustainable consumption and production, and reducing poverty
and inequality. By prioritizing sustainability and social justice, global
citizens can contribute to building a more equitable and sustainable world
for everyone.

In summary, global citizenship involves recognizing our

interconnectedness with the world and taking action to promote positive
change on a global scale. This requires understanding and respecting
diverse cultures, promoting sustainable development, and prioritizing
social justice and environmental sustainability. By embracing global
citizenship, individuals can contribute to building a better world for all.

- Eugene V. Debs, Member of US Senate

The idea of global citizenship has gained prominence as individuals recognize

their responsibilities to the world, beyond their country of origin. It emphasizes the
need for collective action to address global challenges such as climate change,
poverty, and inequality.

Abstraction

Global ethics is a relatively new field of study that has gained recognition as a
distinct academic discipline with a unique approach to ethical dilemmas. According to
the Global Ethics Network, it refers to the principles, values, and norms that should
guide the international community in its interactions with other nations, groups, and
individuals across national boundaries (Global Ethics Network, n.d.). The goal is to
promote universal values that respect the dignity and well-being of all people,
regardless of their race, nationality, or cultural background.
Kofi Annan, the former Secretary-General of the United Nations, defined global
ethics as the fundamental principles of decency, fairness, and justice that should
underlie relationships between people everywhere (Annan, 1 999). Mary Robinson,
former President of Ireland and UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, explained
that global ethics is an ethical framework that recognizes the interconnectedness and
interdependence of all peoples and nations, and emphasizes the need for a shared
sense of responsibility to promote peace, justice, and human dignity for all
(Robinson, 2013).

Global ethics is an attempt to address ethical issues that go beyond national of
boarder and to promote values that are universal in nature. It emphasizes the of recognizing
the importance of recognizing the inherent worth and dignity of all human beings, and the
need for collective action to promote justice, fairness, and human rights on a global scale

Global Issues and Concerns

Global issues and concerns are problems that have an impact on the entire world and
not limited to particular regions or countries. Such problems necessitate international
collaboration and remedies since individual countries cannot solve them alone. Several
illustrations of global issues and concerns are provided below.

Human rights - Ensuring the safeguarding and advancement of fundamental Human

rights, including the entitlements to personal safety, freedom, and security, the opportunity to
express oneself, the access to education, and the right to healthcare.

Global justice - The equitable distribution of advantages and disadvantages throughout

the international society, encompassing topics such as poverty, disparity, and climate change.

Environmental ethics - The ethical aspects connected to the utilization, preservation,

and safeguarding of natural resources, including the consequences of human actions on the
surroundings.

War and peace - The moral aspects surrounding war and conflict, which encompasses
concerns such as the principles of just war theory, the need for humanitarian intervention, and
the obligation to safeguard against harm.

Cultural diversity - The ethical aspects concerning the recognition and appreciation of
cultural differences and the protection of minority rights.

Global health - To address the ethics of access to healthcare and fair distribution of
healthcare resources worldwide is an important ethical consideration.

Business ethics - The ethical aspects concerning the responsibility, openness, and
liability of multinational corporations in their global business practices.

Fostering Global Ethics

It is crucial to promote global ethics in addressing the current global issues and
concerns. By prioritizing global ethics, individuals and organizations can strive towards
creating a world that is fair, sustainable, and equitable. This can be achieved through various
means, such as spreading awareness through education and campaigns, and implementing
policies and practices that prioritize ethical values when making decisions. Ultimately,
promoting global ethics can lead to a more united and cooperative global community, capable
of tackling the challenges that the world faces today. Below are some ways to promote global
ethics:

Practice empathy and cultural understanding. A crucial aspect of promoting global

ethics is recognizing and comprehending cultural differences. Empathy, which entails
grasping and sharing the emotions of individuals from diverse cultures, is crucial for
enhancing communication and developing positive relationships with individuals from various
backgrounds.

Use sustainable practices: Sustainability entails fulfilling current needs without

jeopardizing the capacity of future generations to meet their own needs. Employing
sustainable practices, such as minimizing waste, preserving natural resources, and utilizing
renewable energy sources, can promote ethical practices on a global scale.

Respect human rights: The principles of human rights are crucial in promoting global
ethics. To create a fair and equitable world, it is important to treat every individual with

respect, dignity, and fairness, regardless of their gender, race, ethnicity, religion, or social
status.

Advocate for social justice: In the context of global ethics, it is important to tackle
inequality and injustice. Advocating for social justice entails opposing discrimination,
oppression, and poverty, and striving to establish a world that is fair and just for all.

Foster dialogue and collaboration: Effective communication and cooperation are

essential for promoting global ethics. It is important to engage in respectful and constructive
conversations with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures to gain a deeper
understanding of different perspectives and issues. By fostering dialogue and collaboration,
individuals and communities can work together to find solutions that benefit everyone and
promote ethical practices on a global scale.

LESSON 2: GLOBAL INTERDEPENDENCE

"You cannot separate any part from the whole interdependence rules the cosmic order”
- Taisen Deshimaru, Japanese Buddhist Teacher

Everything in the universe is interconnected and dependent on each other. The

concept of interdependence is also relevant to the idea of global citizenship in the
contemporary world, where people and countries are increasingly connected and dependent
on each other for various aspects of life, such as trade, migration, and the environment.
Therefore, understanding the interdependence among individuals societies, and nations is
crucial for practicing global citizenship and promoting a sustainable and just world.

Abstraction

Global interdependence refers to how different regions and countries are

interconnected, and how the actions of one country can have an impact on others. In
the modern world, this interconnectedness has expanded beyond national borders and
now includes issues such as trade, finance, and the environment. To address the
numerous issues that demand a coordinated global response, such as climate change,
economic inequality, and the spread of infectious diseases, collaboration and
coordination across nations and regions have become essential. The UN has
emphasized the significance of shared responsibility and collective action to
underscoring development and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, the
necessity for global concerns to be addressed through international collaboration and
coordination.

Global interdependence has consequently emerged as a key aspect of the 21st

century, and all facets of society must pay attention to and participate in its
ramifications. How we respond to these opportunities and challenges will determine
how the world develops in the future. Collaboration and coordination across nations
and regions will continue to be essential in advancing sustainable development and
creating a more fair and just society.

Factors Affecting Global Interdependence

Global interdependence is the term used to describe how different elements, such
as economic, social, political, and environmental ones, are interconnected and how
they all contribute to the complex and dynamic phenomena known as globalization.
The modern world is significantly shaped by a number of variables, including cross-
border migration, cultural influences, and interrelated political systems, in addition to
economic interdependence, which is a significant part of global interconnectedness.

It is crucial to understand that the advantages and downsides of globalization are

not equally spread; while some nations and individuals benefit significantly from it,
others suffer negative economic, social, and environmental effects. For instance,
developing nations may experience resource and labor exploitation while suffering
disproportionately from environmental degradation and climate change. To advance
global justice and sustainable development, it is essential to acknowledge these
inequities.

New opportunities and problems will arise as the globe becomes more linked,
necessitating continual participation and communication across sectors and regions.
To address the complicated and dynamic nature of globalization, comprehending
global interdependence calls for a commitment to mutual understanding, collaboration,
and sustainable development. To ensure that globalization benefits all people and
advances a just and sustainable society, this calls for a joint effort to promote ethical
ideals, global awareness, and shared responsibility.

Global Interdependence to Consider

Trade and Economic Interdependence Given that trade is one of the main forces
behind globalization, this is likely the most obvious subject. It is crucial to take into
account the advantages and disadvantages of free trade agreements, economic
integration, and the effects of economic inequality on international interdependence.

Environmental Interdependence The effects of environmental degradation are

easier to see as the world gets more linked. Environmental problems including

resource depletion, pollution, and climate change affect all nations, regardless of how
economically developed they are.

Political Interdependence Political interdependence is the idea that choices taken

at the national level can affect those in other nations. This can apply to concerns like
immigration, human rights, and global security.

Cultural Interdependence - Although it may be the hardest to measure, cultural

interconnectedness is a significant part of globalization. Exchanges of cultural
concepts, beliefs, and customs can have a significant influence on society and can
serve to bind together various cultural groups.

Technological Interdependence Technology developments have made it simpler

than ever for people to interact and share information across international boundaries.
However, there are concerns associated with this technological dependency, including
cyber security issues and the possibility for a wider gap between those who have
access to technology and those who do not.

Steps Towards Global Interdependence

Working towards global interdependence necessitates a collective endeavor

involving various segments of society, such as governments, corporations, non-
governmental organizations, and individuals. To achieve global interdependence, the
following measures could be taken:

Promote international cooperation To tackle worldwide issues such as climate

change, economic disparity, and the proliferation of contagious diseases, it is
imperative to have international cooperation. Diplomatic discussions, exchanging of
successful methodologies, and financing international establishments that facilitate
cooperation and coordination are ways for governments to encourage such
cooperation.

Foster sustainable development In order to achieve global interdependence,

sustainable development plays a vital role as it ensures economic growth, protects the
environment, and promotes social equity. Governments can facilitate sustainable
development by supporting renewable energy initiatives, conserving natural resources,
and encouraging responsible business practices.

Encourage global citizenship To be a global citizen means acknowledging the

interdependence between individuals, communities and nations and taking
accountability for our actions that affect others, locally and globally. Engaging in
cultural exchange, volunteering and supporting social and environmental issues are
ways to demonstrate global citizenship.

Promote fair trade and ethical consumption to ensure that producers in

developing countries receive fair compensation for their products, fair trade promotes
equitable trade practices. Ethical consumption, on the other hand, involves making
informed choices about the products we buy. This means opting for products that are
environmentally sustainable and produced using fair labor practices.

Support education and knowledge exchange: Education and knowledge

sharing play a vital role in enhancing comprehension and cooperation among diverse
cultures and regions. Governments can allocate resources to education initiatives that
promote global citizenship and foster intercultural understanding. Similarly, individuals can
facilitate dialogues and engage in cultural exchange with people from varied backgrounds
to promote mutual understanding.

Global citizenship is a concept that emphasizes the interconnectedness of the

world and the responsibility of individuals to promote social justice, environmental
sustainability, and peace beyond geographical or national boundaries (Andrews,
2017). According to UNESCO, global citizenship involves cultivating respect, empathy,
and solidarity towards other people and cultures while recognizing a shared sense of
belonging to a common humanity (UNESCO, 2015). This approach to citizenship
highlights the need to address global challenges such as poverty, inequality, and
climate change through collaborative efforts across borders.

As globalization and digital technologies continue to connect people and

communities around the world, the need for global citizenship becomes increasingly
urgent (Myers & Schindler, 2016). Global challenges require collective action from
individuals and communities worldwide to achieve sustainable solutions. Therefore,
global citizenship education is critical for preparing individuals to become active and
responsible global citizens who can contribute to creating a more just and sustainable
world (UNESCO, 2014). Through such education, individuals can develop the skills,
knowledge, and attitudes necessary to engage in meaningful action towards social and
environmental justice.

Cultural Diversity

Cultural diversity denotes the multiplicity of cultures, customs, and lifestyles

that exist in the world. It is an indispensable component of Maman society that
enhances intricacy and diversity of the global community UNESCO, 2001). Cultural
diversity is evident in the dissimilarities among people's convictions, values, traditions,
and conduct. It comprises the diversity of dialects, beliefs, and ethnicities that exist
around the world (UNESCO, 2002). The following are examples of cultural diversity:

Language diversity The world is home to more than 7,000 languages, each
possessing distinct grammar, vocabulary, and cultural connotations. This variety of
ages reflects the vast range of cultures and ways of life present globally.

Religious diversity Numerous religions are practiced throughout the world, with
distinct sets of beliefs, customs, and rituals associated with each. Christianity, Islam,
Buddhism, Hinduism, and Judaism are just a few examples of the many religions
found globally.

Food diversity Every country has its own unique culinary traditions with a wide
variety of flavors, ingredients, and cooking techniques. These include Filipino, Italian,
Chinese, Indian, and Chinese food, among others.

Artistic diversity Artistic expression is varied and reflects cultural diversity, with
many art forms being exclusive to particular cultures, including music, dance, eater,
visual arts, and literature, among others. Each culture's artistic traditions are a
reflection of its history, beliefs, and values.

Fashion diversity As a reflection of their cultural identity, various civilizations

have unique clothing and fashion trends. This encompasses both the traditional attire
worn by Indigenous groups around the world and the current fashion trends of many
nations. The expression of cultural heritage, history, and beliefs also heavily relies on

clothing and fashion.

Cultural variety is essential for fostering tolerance and understanding among

people of various origins. It aids people in developing an understanding of the
distinctions between cultures and in recognizing their shared traits, according to
UNESCO (2005). Additionally, cultural diversity aids in fostering societal harmony and
minimizing confrontations between various groups. People are more likely to get along
with others, despite their differences, if they learn to recognize and value cultural
diversity.

Despite its advantages, cultural diversity is threatened by globalization, which

can result in a loss of cultural traditions and a homogenization of civilizations. The
richness and diversity of the world we live in must be maintained, according to
UNESCO's 2002 report, which underlines the value of promoting and protecting
cultural diversity. By assisting people in understanding other cultures and appreciating
the significance of cultural diversity, education plays a significant role in encouraging
cultural diversity. By encouraging international conversation and understanding,
education can help create a society that is more peaceful and sustainable, according
to UNESCO (2019).

Intercultural Communication

Figure 41. Examples of Intercultural communication

Intercultural communication is the sharing of information among people from

various cultural backgrounds so that they can understand and appreciate the
differences in culture that exist between those from various racial and ethnic
backgrounds. Intercultural communication, according to Chen and Starosta (2000),
entails more than merely exchanging verbal and nonverbal cues; it also entails
interpreting those cues in the context of the participants' respective cultures. It is
critical for people to be conscious of their own cultural prejudices and presumptions as
well as open to understanding and respecting the cultural differences of others.

People need to develop a variety of abilities, such as cultural awareness,

empathy, and active listening, in order to interact effectively across cultures. Lustig
and Koester (2019) define cultural awareness as the recognition and comprehension
of interpersonal cultural differences and how these differences may affect
communication. While active listening entails paying attention to and understanding
the messages being delivered by others, empathy is the capacity to comprehend and
appreciate the perspective of others. By honing these skills, people can get through
the obstacles to cross-cultural communication and have meaningful, fruitful
connections with others from various cultural backgrounds.

Improving Intercultural Communication

Effective communication involves several key elements that can help you convey your
message more clearly and achieve your communication goals. Identifying your purpose and
the primary cause or objective of your communication is a crucial first step. Are you
attempting to educate, influence, or entertain? Knowing your goal will enable you to more
effectively customize your message.

Knowing your audience is a crucial component as well. Think about the sudience you
are speaking to, their background, hobbies, and level of education. This can assist you in
selecting the appropriate vocabulary, tone, and examples and tales to employ. Choosing the
appropriate media is also essential, whether you're communicating via email, phone, video
conference, or in-person.

It is crucial to be succinct and precise in order to make sure that your message is
received clearly. Avoid using jargon, acronyms, or technical terminology that your readers
might not understand by utilizing plain, straightforward language instead. Use the right
nonverbal cues to support your argument since your body language, tone of voice, and facial
expressions may all reveal a lot of information.

Being attentive to your audience is crucial since communication is a two-way street.

Respond appropriately and demonstrate that you are interested in what they have to say.
Additionally, you may make sure that your message is understood by clarifying any
ambiguities or worries using questions. In order to make sure that your audience has
comprehended your message and to answer any concerns or questions they may have, it is
crucial to follow up with them following your conversation.

Global Citizenship in Practice

In actuality, "global citizenship" refers to the behaviors and acts that people can
engage in to advance global responsibility, involvement, and awareness, which is critical in
solving issues like poverty, inequality, and environmental sustainability (Andreotti, 2006). It
requires understanding how interrelated nations are and the importance of collaborating to
address these issues. The practice of global citizenship entails implementing initiatives at
various scales to advance goodwill and the common good.

Volunteering for regional or worldwide groups that advance social justice,

sustainability, or human rights is an illustration of global citizenship in action, as is
participating in advocacy or activism for international concerns (Lobel, 2016). It also
entails encouraging intercultural understanding and communication, acknowledging and
respecting the diversity of cultures and viewpoints, and being open to working with and
learning from those with various backgrounds by engaging in these behaviors, people can
help to build a more just, sustainable, and peaceful world

In general, practicing global citizenship demands people to be accountable for their

choices and how they affect the world, as well as to collaborate with others to bring about
positive change on a global scale. It is essential to building a better society for both the
present and future generations and is a mentality and set of behaviors that can be cultivated
and applied by individuals, companies, and communities alike (Andreotti, 2006).

Sustainable Consumption and Production as Global Citizens

Global citizenship practice involves in promoting sustainable and responsible

consumption and production. This means being aware of the impact of our actions on the
environment and taking steps to reduce our carbon footprint, conserve resources, and support
sustainable practices. As individuals, we have a responsibility to reduce our environmental
impact and promote sustainable practices in order to ensure a healthy and livable planet for
future generations (United Nations, 2015).
There are several actions that individuals can take to promote sustainable and
responsible consumption and production. For instance, they can support sustainable
businesses, choose products that are sustainably sourced or produced, reduce their use of
single-use plastics, conserve energy and water, and reduce food waste. Supporting policies
and initiatives that promote sustainability, such as renewable energy, green infrastructure, and
circular economy models can also be a great way of promoting sustainability (United Nations
Development Programme, 2019).
By making conscious choices and taking these actions, individuals can to creating a
more sustainable and equitable world for all. This can help to mitigate climate change,
conserve natural resources, and promote sustainable contribute development. Therefore,
promoting sustainable and responsible consumption and production is a critical aspect of
global citizenship (United Nations, 2015).

Application

Global Citizenship Action Plan. Brainstorm on a list of global issues that you are
passionate or concerned about, such as poverty, climate change, human rights, or education.
From this list, you will select one issue and research it in more detail, identifying the root
causes, impact on people and the planet, and potential solutions. Next, you develop a Global
Citizenship Action Plan, which includes a clear description of the chosen global issue and its
importance, a list of practical actions to address the issue (including individual and
collaborative actions, and advocating for policy change), and a timeline for implementing the
action plan with short-term and long-term goals. Finally, you will share your action plan with
the big group. This activity encourages you to think critically about global issues, understand
their impact, and develop practical solutions to address them as responsible global citizens.
