This document is an assignment for Fluid Mechanics 1 (CE 213) at Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology, Bhopal, consisting of ten problems related to fluid dynamics and mechanics. The problems involve calculations of torque, viscosity, pressure, work done in splitting drops, and other fluid properties. Each problem requires the application of principles of fluid mechanics to solve practical scenarios.

MAULANA AZAD NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY
BHOPAL DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING FLUID MECHANICS 1 (CE 213): ASSIGNMENT 1
1. A disc of 10 cm diameter rotates on a table separated by an oil film
of 1.5 mm thickness whose dynamic viscosity is 2 poise. If the disc rotates at 100 rpm, find out the torque required to rotate the disc. 2. A square plate (50 cm × 50 cm) with weight of 200 N slides on an inclined plane of slope 1 vertical to 2.5 horizontal with a uniform velocity of 50 cm/s. A thin layer of oil of 5 mm thickness is filled between the plane and the plate. Find the viscosity of the oil. 3. A horizontal thin plate of size 30 cm × 30 cm is pulled at 1 m/s through a 3.6 mm thick oil layer sandwiched between two plate, one stationary and other moving at constant velocity of 0.3 m/s as shown in the figure. The dynamic viscosity of oil is 0.027 Pa-s. Assuming the velocity in each oil layer varies linearly, determine the force that needs to be applied on the plate.
4. A tube of 2 mm in diameter is dipped vertically into a container
containing mercury. The lower end of the tube is 2 cm below the mercury surface. Find the pressure of air supplied to the tube to blow a hemispherical bubble at the lower end. Consider surface tension of mercury equal to 0.4 N/m. 5. A spherical water drop of 1 mm diameter splits up in air into 100 smaller drops of equal size. Find the work required in splitting the drop. The surface tension of water in the air is 0.073 N/m. 6. A pump is used to transport water to a higher reservoir. If the water temperature is 20C, determine the lowest pressure that can exits in pump without cavitation. 7. Determine the maximum diameter of steel and aluminum balls that would float on water surface at 10ºC. The densities of steel and aluminum balls are 7800 Kg/m3 and 2700 Kg/m3 respectively. 8. If the Bulk modulus of elasticity of water is 5 × 10 6 kPa, determine the pressure increase required to reduce the volume of water by (i) 1% and (ii) 2%. 9. An 8 cm diameter soap bubble is to be enlarged to 8.5 cm by blowing air into it. Determine the work required. Take surface tension of soap solution to be 0.039 N/m. 10. The diameters of two limbs of a U-tube are 1 mm and 2.2 mm, respectively. It is partially filled with liquid of surface tension 0.06 N/m. The tube is held vertically, and its material has zero contact angle. If the difference in the level of two menisci is 15 mm, determine the mass density of the liquid.
